About Me

About the music
Four San Francisco-based musicians, all pulling in slightly different directions, find dynamic equilibrium in Papaskew. The music is fresh and instantly likable, but at the same time worth spending some quality time getting to know more personally. Papaskew is able to combine tight songwriting, polished arrangements, and intelligent lyrics with the adventurous narrative of improvisation in just the right amounts. Papaskew's compositions are simultaneously familiar and new; they manage to put a unique twist on the standard rock, jamband, and pop formulas that makes them at once a band for the masses and musicians that musicians will dig. Drawing from a musical palette that includes tight harmonies, vintage overdrive, up-for-it rhythm, and delicate instrumental interplay, Papaskew offers up something appealing for all music lovers.
About the band
Papaskew originally formed when Jeff and David met in San Francisco, CA in the spring of 2007. When they realized that they grew up just miles apart from each other in Milwaukee, WI, their musical fate was sealed. The band worked its way through several incarnations in 2007, and after several months of auditions and rehearsals Papaskew re-emerged in March, 2008 with the addition of Derek's southern-influenced grooves and Phil's vintage stylings, Papaskew is catchier, funkier, and more danceable than it has ever been. Papaskew is rooted firmly in San Francisco, CA.
Papaskew's listeners might be tempted to reconceptualize the band after every song they hear. Thanks to the fact that all members of the band share songwriting duties as well as their incredibly varied listening habits, Papaskew's music transcends the broad genres that the music industry loves to employ and that music lovers love to ignore. Papaskew can seamlessly slide between smooth lounge jazz and grimy alt-rock, complex progressive compositions and simple soulful harmonies, straightforward folk-based songwriting and DJ-influenced grooves. Taken in all at once, a full set of Papaskew's music covers so much of the modern musical landscape that it defies traditional labels.
Before forming Papaskew, David, Jeff, Derek, and Phil all played and recorded in various bands and music ensembles ranging from jazz combos to pop rock outfits, classic rock bands to hip hop rhythm sections. The band, collectively, has years of gigging experience under their belts at many professional levels as well as recording experience in the studio. Papaskew is well prepared and poised to make an indelible impression on the Bay Area's music scene in the very near future.
