i would love to meet musicians so we could talk about music. i am also open to playing with people. if you have a group that would like a trumpet player to sit in or a bass player, let me know. i'm open to playing classical music and jazz music. those are the preferences, but if you have a funk group or somethin hip like that lemme know also. in fact, if you have anything, let me know. really!
music should be played for the listener to enjoy it for the sake of it being music, not a performance. music shouldnt be viewed as a show, because music is intended to be a service to others, not a thing of putting one's self on a pedistal. it should be played for the sake of others to listen to it, not for self gain. it should be well-crafted by skilled artists, not thrown together in a frenzy of unbridaled confusion. so then, what do ya wanna listen to? check some of these people out if you want to hear some great jazz: freddie hubbard (my all time favourite trumpet player), lee morgan, miles davis, clifford brown, herbie hancock, wayne shorter, billy higgins, bobby timmons, bobby shew, ron carter, art blakey, elvin jones, tony williams, john coltrane, duke ellington, count basie, i could go on and on but i'm tired. check these people out. if you like them, check out the people they play with in their groups as well. thats how you develope an ear for it. that and taking the time to really learn music.people are always asking me why i like jazz and just kinda laugh and say politely, "cuz it's good." its sad though, that they have to ask it. but i tell them that it's music with more than just a "good beat" or something. it doesnt sound the same. its always spontaneous. i have listened to mile's davis' "kind of blue" at least 800 times. i ALWAYS hear something in it that i never heard before. i turn on the radio and i wonder what is so great about a lot of the stuff that is on it. it is quite repetative, the almost always constant rhythmic meter of 4/4 or the same chord progressions with no harmonic twists and almost the same constant chord movement. to me, a lot of the stuff on it isnt worth 30 seconds. i'm not trying to put down what you listen to but if you dont take time to really develope a musical sense of what making art is, then how can you grow into a better musican (obviously i am speaking to musicians on that one). a lot of the on it music soundss like a group of loud people yelling at you about what lewd acts theyd like to (or have) performed on people. there is no satisfaction to that...jazz is spontanious and original, and its played for the sake of music, which is to be heard and appriciated by people, not for putting yourself above anyone else. it's feelings poured out with a craftful artist's brush, not with just whatever might sound "good". it's the music of musicians.funny to say, but actually i am a classicaly trained musician. but i am quickly learning to create the art of jazz as well.i'm a composer. nothing really major yet, and i work on stuff that i have written to always improve it. the more i learn, the more i apply to what i have written.i have recently started trying to arrange music. right now, all music i have arranged is for trumpet alone. my next step is to arrange for trumpet and piano. my goal is to arrange for jazz ensembles and concert orchestras.i teach trumpet and bass lessons. e-mail me if you want info.
