About Me

The celebrated French singer Jean-Jacques Plumedematante (real name Jean-Jacques Jardindemononcle) emerged from the Parisian underground in the 1960s as a new master of the lyrically expressive "chanson" form popularised by Brel, Piaf and others.Born during the war in wine cellar where his parents were hiding from the Nazis (his mother was Welsh), the young Plumedematante was soon entertaining his family and friends with renditions of drinking songs he had overheard sung by passing German troops. After the war ended, Plumedematante's family left the cellar and returned to their farm in the Saone valley; but young Jacques opted to stay, on account of the free wine, and was permanently drunk for the first 15 years of his life.He finally straightened out in 1957, when a neighbour suggested his vocal talents would be best exploited in the swinging clubs of Paris. Thus began a meteoric career that saw him performing at the funeral of President Charles de Gaulle and, later, at the opening of a major new supermarket in Boulogne.Having abandoned the traditional "chanson" repertoire in the early 80s in order to concentrate on his own more radical compositions, Plumedematante has seen his popularity waver at times, but is now beginning to appeal to a whole new audience of young hipsters eager to hear new music with substance.
