Skaz Narrative (1830)

The term skaz comes from the Russian verb skazat' (to tell) and such words as rasskaz (short story) and skazka (fairy tale). It is also a word used of (traditional or “folkâ€) oral narratives, and has occasionally been used of works to suggest their origin in terms of such an oral context (as in the full title of Leskov’s Levsha, or “Tale of the squint-eyed, left-handed man from Tula and the steel fleaâ€, 1881). The word has therefore essentially to do with “tellingâ€.
The designation skaz was subsequently adopted by the Formalist school of Russian criticism (in the years just before and just after the Revolution) as a term denoting a type of narrative technique, which emphasizes oral speech, thus invigorating literary discourse (usually first-person) with elements from living speech, often from lower class, lesser educated, provincial (or regional) narrators. skaz might comprise an entire work, or an embedded portion thereof, but something more than merely snatches of dialogue. This type of technique was distinguished and explicated in essays by, among others, Boris Eikhenbaum and Iurii Tynianov (see in particular Eikhenbaum’s essay “How Gogol’s ‘Overcoat’ Is Made†(1919). As defined in one Soviet literary encyclopedia, skaz is: “a special type of narrative structured as emanating from a person distanced from the author (whether concretely named or presumed), and one who possesses a distinct manner of discourseâ€. In other words, the discourse presented in a skaz narrative comes in a register of language marked as being in some way distinct from the author’s own. This may involve idiosyncrasies of style, such as eccentric or exaggerated use of attitude or metaphor, or indeed inarticulacy, as well as more obvious instances of sub-standard speech, slang, or regional dialect. Embedded narratives or anecdotes may only be regarded as examples of skaz if their language departs noticeably from the literary language otherwise used by the author (or implied author) in question. Pragmatic and logical, but only to cut through bullshit. Attempts to be close to their feelings and relies on the gut and the heart, which is really, just another gut. Bad at thinking clearly at isolated items, better at placing those items within a system and framework.
Hates pedestals and the placing of things on them. Material items. Individuals. It's not needed.
Lack of any talent except patience in himself (never in much else) and dumbly going forward with no idea what's next. Can't ever remember nouns. Mumbles. Can't ever talk straight and thinks visually - without a spoken/written language, which doesn't help when trying explain, just what I think is so funny.
