Music Day at the Institut Français
part of “Explore Sites and Sounds – a midsummer festival of Architecture and Musicâ€
Saturday 21st June
Free event from 10am 'till midnight
Here comes what is shaping up to be the biggest and best free musical celebration yet in London, on the longest day of the year, with Amadou & Mariam, Arthur H, Pauline Croze and Phoebe Killdeer & The Short Straws to top the bill at the Institut Français!
Exhibition Road Music Day (ERMD), London's home of Fête de la Musique, is the annual one-day free festival of live music set up by the leading cultural organisations around South Kensington. For its 4th edition, the event joins forces with the London Festival of Architecture. With Exhibition Road closed to the traffic for the entire day, South Kensington, London’s premier cultural quarter, will be taken over with temporary structures, 25 different indoor and outdoor stages, 25 workshops and 150 concerts to "Explore Sites and Sounds" in their best diversities.
ERMD is London's contribution to the international festival "Fête de la Musique" initiated in France in 1982 and today held in more than 350 cities around the world. In previous years, more than 15,000 Londoners enjoyed the event and its expanded range of music and styles!
The Institut Français will present an exceptional line-up, even better than ever.
Ciné lumière will host the legendary Malian couple Amadou & Mariam, singer-songwriter Pauline Croze and poet-rocker Arthur H, alongside Bibi Tanga & Le Professeur Inlassable purveyors of a magical world-jazz fusion. The Premiere screening of the colourful and musical documentary Bamako, meeting place by Marc-Antoine Moreau will round off the evening.
5pm - midnight
For the first time, the Lycée français will host a stage in its courtyard with an exciting line-up that ranges from student pop & rock bands to European music with Taraf Transilvan (Romania) and Ferenczi Gyorgi es a Rackajam (Hungary); the Parisian rockabilly blues quartet Phoebe Killdeer & the Short Straws, headed by former Nouvelle Vague vocalist, will top the bill.
12noon - 6pm
All afternoon on the terrace of the French Language Centre audiences can hear a selection of inspired artists in intimate acoustic sessions. Among the enormous range of genres and sounds on offer: classical guitar, country folk rock, pop rock “nouvelle chansonâ€, jazzy rhythms, sawa blues and gypsy vibes!

TOGETHER WITH 4 BIG FRENCH DJS – BUSY P, MEHDI, SURKIN, YUKSEK
Turnmills’ flagship Saturday night event and most consistently busy party of the past decade returns to clubland this summer for a brand new residency. TOGETHER will be re-launching on Saturday 28th June at Scala.
On a musical tip, Together is bracing itself for a mini-French invasion with Ed Banger leader Busy P aka Pedro Winter and fellow label party starter DJ Mehdi crossing the pond together with Institubes Records’ Surkin and the latest Parisan prince Yuksek.
The nu-wave noize coming from France has been taking over the world for a few years now - even Kanye West is jumping on the band-wagon with his Daft Punk samples...
In Busy P you have the man mainly responsible for this new musical movement. As Daft Punk’s manager and Ed Bangers’ head-honcho, he’s helped shape the careers of so many of today’s hottest new things – from the robot rockers themselves, to Justice, SebastiAn, Uffie, Kavinsky and Mehdi. His own productions are coming on strong right now too, check out ‘Chop Suey’ for starters, and as a DJ he’s worshipped as a god by the Ed Banger faithful the world over.
DJ Mehdi can expect similar adulation from the appreciative crowd as he makes his Together debut and brings his own ruckus to the decks. Brought up on a hip-hop diet, Mehdi’s 2006 album ‘Lucky Boy’ was one of the year’s best.
DJ/Producer, Surkin is another big talent to watch out for. His latest joint ‘Next of Kin’ is his biggest release to date and with remixes for the like of Boys Noize, Chromeo, Justice, Klaxons and the next guest Yuksek...
Yuksek who made his Together debut with some aplomb in January 2008 and is someone we’re tipping for greatness! As a classically trained musician, Yuksek is part of the next wave of French artists set to dominate clubland this year and his ‘Composer’ EP remains a big fave with all the heavyweight jocks.
Not to be missed!
