Developing his character in the clichéd story of most African American children in the United States – amidst gangs, drugs, violence, profanity, and poverty in a single-parent household – which way does a child go to grow? The child grows up by not conforming to the peer pressures of the street life. He ventures out and sees that the world is bigger than the many blocks he has called home. Inspired by his environment and his mother, he is the son of mother earth and lives to shine light upon those in his circle and on his mother. He matures to understand Chicago from all sides and realizes his city is just a microcosm of the world. He reads and writes the questions and answers of the ever changing game that is life.A Hip Hop Baby
In an era nurturing a young hip hop and bridging the Carter Administration with Reagonomics, he is born… Lanier Dudley, June 17th, 1980, Chicago, Illinois. His arrival is more than a date, it’s a lifestyle and the origins of his essence.Exposed to many different cultures and musical genres, ‘L’ considers himself “The Street Anthropologistâ€. He remembers the sincerity and authenticity of the soulful lyrics and rhythmic music that his mother would play for her only son., including Al Green, Otis Redding, Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Isley’s, Bobby Womack, The Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Prince and many, many others. .Outside the confines of his mother’s record player, he was also inspired by Golden Era MC’s such as Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Boogie Down Productions, and EPMD.Encouraged by Mrs. Sigale, his 8th grade teacher, he began creative writing. Although he did not seriously start writing rhymes until high school he was inspired by the class of 94 (also his 8th grade class). With albums like Nas’ “Illmaticâ€, Wu–Tang Clan’s “Enter the 36 Chambersâ€, Common Sense’s “Resurrectionâ€, Gang Starr’s Hard to Earn, Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Doggy Styleâ€, and The Roots’ “Do You Want More?!?!?†all dropping around the same era, he was engulfed with the hip hop of that time. As a student he was the kid that underachieved, but teachers always considered him an enigma because he did not “perform to his potential†but excelled in the classroom. Instead of writing notes in his notebooks he wrote his story the way he saw it. Writing rhymes, poetry and love letters honed his skills as a lyricist. Under the name “L.A.N.I.E.R†(Lyrically All N’s Investigate Every Rhyme) a.k.a. “Lyricidal†he would nonchalantly rap when encouraged by his friends to freestyle, battle or whatever on his commutes to and from school. When not arguing and commenting on his favorite songs, who had the best album, or articles in The Source, he was listening to music.Hip Hop and Rap encompassed within one person, LD-HABLO is the contradiction of a person who looks at life from many different perspectives. Loving the “real†essence of hip hop culture and being a representation of it, he is also a connoisseur of mainstream and club rap. He believes that hip hop is what we make it. Although feels contemporary music lacks the message and quality of the music he grew up on.,he acknowledges the changing times and realizes the talent of today’s artists. Yet instead of simply joining the game, he strives to change the game. We are products and ambiguous reflections of our environments, bad or good.LD-HABLO exists as Lanier’s alter ego and the personification and manifestation of a true Gemini MC. He is the duality of man, the third sign of the zodiac and he is simply complex. As a Gemini he embodies the wit, adaptability, versatility, and intellectual nature of the twin; free-natured, poetic, lyrical, conscious, and charismatic are just a few of the adjectives that describe him.P.E.A.C.E 2 ALL,L(Yeah I wrote it....what?)
