Introduction
The Lesbian Art Debate is a group project established by two artists, Alice Kell and Rosie Perry to encourage discourse into the definition of lesbian art. We have all experienced 'otherness' in one form or another, our primary aim is to express this in art. We want to create a dialogue about lesbian art with the intention of there being an increased awareness of our sub-culture for future generations. We feel that there is a lack of critical theory concerning lesbian art and so through encouraging more participants in this field we hope to encourage a discousre. Historically there has been a lack of accessible lesbian art work which is authentically made by lesbians exhibiting the lesbian gaze and depicting the lesbian lifestyle and experience. A problem we have is defining what the lesbian gaze is. we hope that by encouraging a debate and showing alternative positions, formulations of a lesbian gaze can begin. A desire we have is for others to have an informed opinion on the lesbian perspective of looking. We want to show what we find beautiful, what we are attracted to, and the way we live in society.
