About Me

My name is Booker Taliafero Washington. I was born on a plantation in Virginia in 1856, but was freed when I was 9 years of age. While working in the coal mine, I happened to overhear people talking of the Hampton Institute. I made it my goal to attend, and I worked my way through school. I graduated from Hampton and returned to my hometown to teach. Education is my true passion in life. I believe that with continued education, all races can cooperate and become equal. For this reason, I founded Tuskegee Institute in 1888, in order to help young African Americans like me improve themselves. Through hard work, compliance, and intelligence, African Americans can have an impact on white society and find equality. I am heavily criticized for my beliefs, but I remain strong in them. Through shared learning and cooperation, we can experience mutual progress.I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4
