About Me

The Carry On Story :
In 1958 a film under the title of The Bull Boys written by R. F Delderfield was going into semi - production at Pinewood Studios with producer Peter Rogers and director Gerald Thomas. At that point they never knew that this would be the birth of one of the longest running comedy series ever to hit the big screen.
Soon after production had barely got off the ground the title and the story was changed. The original story was about a group of dancers serving in the National Service, this was changed and Carry On Sergeant was born.
The series grew, every year a new film was hitting the cinema and attracting new audiences young and old. In 1966 after 12 sucessfull films with Anglo Ammalgamated, Stuart Levy died leaving the series without a distributor. The Rank Organisation was soon quick to take over the ever expanding series, but without the Carry On prefix. The next two films would not carry the Carry On title before the film, they were Don't Lose Your Head and Follow That Camel. Soon enough Rank knew what they had on their hands and from then on used the Carry On prefix untill the end in 1978.
By 1978 the series had churned out 31 films and was losing out to more soft porn sex comedies such as the Confessions Of films, and Carry On Emmannuelle was to be the last film to be made. The majority of regular stars were not present due to their utter disgust of the script or they had sadly passed away. The idea was set around the naughty exploits of a woman obsessed with sex, the Carry On's was clashing with the string of sex comedies reeling on to the big screen at this period. The Carry On's could not match it without making it too vulgar and the series ended on a high note.
Nearly 14 years after Emmannuelle another Carry On appeared, but this time it proved fatal. Carry On Columbus was the latest addition to the series, this time using actors and actresses from the present day of comedy, making it a more up to date Carry On outing employing such comedians as Richard Wilson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planner, Peter Richardson, Keith Allen and Julian Clary. Mixing in with the Carry On spirit were Regulars Jim Dale, Bernard Cribbins and Jack Douglas who brought it up to the Carry On level, but unfortunately not even they could save it from disaster.
However it's still rumoured that there is another Carry On to hit the big screen, Under the title of Carry On London. Back in 2005 Peter Rogers confirmed to us that it will arrive. But with the current outlook even the sight of another Carry On still looks bleak, but if the fans continue to follow and the films keep getting broadcast on television there will always be the Carry On.
