Using a variety of materials and tools to create his sculptures, Tom Red Bear presents an eclectic collection of works. Subject matter ranges from mermaids, sphinxes, and Buddhist monks, to traditional forms of Native American expression, representing the Lakota values of tradition, beauty, fortitude and determination. These values are depicted in Red Bear’s highly detailed and descriptive buffalo hunts and thunderbirds. Red Bear believes his style is derived from electromagnetic waves that emit from Mother Earth to all of Creation. Interpreting the beauty and meaning of every day miracles, he asks, “How can one pin down an artist’s attempt to emulate eternity?†Red Bear’s ideas originate from dreams, as well as the dynamic and universal appeal of Lakota traditions and culture, which abound in meaning and spiritual power.
