Like Hot Water Music, Leatherface, The Mercury League and a lot of other No Idea-esque bands? Then don't bother reading on, just go out and pick up Shermer's new album because you will absolutely love it.
Still reading? It's difficult to review this record without it coming out as some kind of verbal love-in. 'Hope Is An Anchor' is a passionate record without ever being emotional; it's a gruff record without ever losing it's melodic side. It's also a record influenced by so many great bands without ever losing its own identity. There are so many great songs it would be wrong to just pick out a few. My advice is to click on the myspace link below, listen to the tracks on offer, add funds to your paypal account and buy. Do it. Do it now.
Meanwhile, over at BIG CHEESE:
The top five albums burning up the BC decks this week…
1. BAD RELIGION - New Maps of Hell (Epitaph)
2. SHERMER - Hope Is An Anchor (Art For Blind)
3. THE LIVING END - State of Emergency (Deck Cheese)
4. KORN - Korn (Virgin)
5. DIZZEE RASCAL - Maths + English (XL)
Anyone that's seen Shermer live will know that these three friends love playing in this band. That exact feeling has been captured on this raucous and anthemic debut album. The dual vocal attack hits you from opener 'This Year's Revolution' and doesn't let up for a second. It's all gold but the blazing 'Sick And Tired (Of Being Sick And Tired)', live favourite 'Goonies Vever Say Die', the heartfelt but punchy 'Sink Before You Swim' and the awesome title track are personal favourites. This passionate release captures the raw energy of the band, warts and all, fantastically and it's refreshing to hear a band that, despite good production, are more concerned about capturing the emotion of their songs in the studio rather than sanitising it. For anyone who likes Leatherface, Hot Water Music or Small Brown Bike this is sure to be one of your favourite albums of the year and shows that there are still powerful and honest DIY punk rock coming up. Thank God.
