About Me

I have coined the phrase "Heavy Steel" to try to explain my style of playing my MSA 10 string pedal steel guitar. I have spent the last 43 years developing my style and I am dedicated to proving that the steel guitar can be utilized in all types of genres and not be limited to just Country and Hawaiian music.I started playing the steel guitar at the age of 12 when my father purchased what I thought was a guitar but in reality was a pedal steel guitar. I just thought that it was a different way to teach standard guitar and I had been taking lessons for a month before I realized that I had been tricked. Even though I was born and raised in Dallas Texas, Country music was the last thing I wanted to play! So, I listened to my favorite rock players and taught myself how to play rock guitar on the pedal steel and realized that I had so many more options available to me using the steel than a regular guitar player would have. From then on I was determined to take the steel guitar to the limits and I believe that I have accomplished this goal, however, I also realize there is a whole lot more that can learned.I have just released my first CD "Walking Upright" and it is available through my website at www.kickassslide.com . This CD has a variety of songs styles from Fusion; Sean Lane style to Jazz, Rock, Eclectic, and Space. I play each part on either my MSA 10 string pedal steel guitar or my dobro or bass guitar. I have a Rolland synth module attached to my dobro that enables me to fill in the other instruments. I am currently working on my second CD that will showcase my country roots along with my wilder side and is titled "Mission to Mars".
