Greetings from Montreal! (May 27, 2008)
This is an update of the news for all Roots Reggae Lovers around the world!
We’ve got a pleasure to announce that the joint forces of Gedeon Jerubbaal & Inity Dub Mission will soon be back in Poland in order to undertake yet another roots-reggae mission in the Old World. The band which was one of the first to enter the emerging Polish Reggae scene in the early 1980’s and crucial in defining the unique sound of the East European Roots will play another long series of shows at the biggest music festivals in Poland which start during the last week of June.
As was the case last year, their recent line-up is based on a powerful riddm section of Inity Dub Mission (the best dub reggae posse West of the Greenwich median) and supported by the young lungs and minds of Jah Brass as well as guitarists of Mighty Dread all of whom have been forming a circle of friends and sound chasers for years. Gedeon’s own Symeon Ruta and Mariusz Nowak (vocal/lyrics and riddim guitar, respectively) with the help of some committed Polish promoters are presently finalizing the preparations for an extended tour that will open with a party at a modest but friendly “U Bazyla†bar in Poznan, hometown and birthplace of Gedeon Jerubbaal itself. What will follow is a plethora of prominent and well-established venues like “Reggae nad Warta†in Gorzów, “Reggae na Piaskach†in Ostrów, “WrocLove Fest†in Wroclaw and a legendary “Ostróda Rock Festival†in Ostróda, all of which feature the greatest names in the history of Jamaican/world reggae: Michael Rose, The Twinkle Brothers, Kaymani Marley, Molara, and The Skatalites among others! Gedeon Jerubbaal’s unconventional, energetic and unusually spiritual (as for 2008 in Poland) performances will surely surprise thousands of reggae fans across the country, proving that –in spite of recent dancehall and pop dominance– Roots can still be a powerful medium if played sincerely, inventively and good.
Additional attraction of several shows this summer will be a presence and participation of another member of the classic 1980s line-up, Maka-Ron, now a full-fledged independent dub producer of his own. Based in Montreal (like Nowak and Ruta) since the beginning of the 1990s, Maka-Ron collaborated with the other two in several Canadian punk and reggae projects, notably Another Kultur Klash, a semi-acoustic roots experiment, recently reactivated in a live sound-system format featuring original dub plates single-handedly produced by Maka-. Reggae lovers in selected Polish cities (Warsaw, Poznan and Wroclaw among others) will have a chance to watch AKK perform live with a friendly participation of the fourth member of the band, Montreal’s own MC Risorious.
Besides their touring, the Gedeon Jerubbaal/Inity Dub Mission posse will have their hands busy recording and mixing their long-due original album Korzenie, cynamon i zloto (Cinnamon, Roots and Gold) as well as producing two video-clips to be aired in summer and fall. A feature-length documentary from the last year tour in Poland will be released with the upcoming issue of Free Colours magazine (FC9, July 2008) and it seems to be a well anticipated hit of the season among the fans and aficionados. To top everything with a serious literary “Punky Reggae Party†flavour, Symeon Ruta’s short story collection Moje trzy wina z Siula (My Three Wines with Siula) –a mix of document and fiction from Gedeon’s turbulent 1980’s past– is being published by a Warsaw publisher Jirafa roja. This book is as good as it is controversial.
Well, as the tour dates or the international stars presence are not fully confirmed, we offer now these few that seem to us sure enough to be worth mentioning. Everything else will be there as soon as we get to Poland and finalize the logistic and financial arrangements.
