About Me

There are things "about me" that even I don't understand! Does anyone ever truly "know" themselves? The truth is, we are human, we change, we create, investigate, shift, and learn. One would hope that you never stop growing, learning, and becoming a better person. If I were to be wiped off the face of the earth at this moment, what would people say about me? What about you? What would be said about you? Nevertheless, if you want some sort of "introduction" to me, here goes:
I work at Koken Art Factory. I was in the Peace Corps in Africa for from 2003 - 2005 where I lived in a little village called Donthieribougou. I had a wonderful host family that I will always treasure. I sing in a band called "Blair and The Facts of Life" and this has given me a creative outlet that I'm addicted to now and never knew that I missed before. I'm a grad student at Wash U that is taking way too much time to finish my thesis. Variety is what I crave, routine makes me want to buy the proverbial "farm". I've lost too many friends over the years because I've had to move around too much. I'm relatively happy. It takes me ages to actually want to pay attention to what people are telling me outside of academia because it seems that most people just talk to fill a void instead of producing thought or reason to life. Sometimes I'm afraid that I'm a snob. Sometimes I'm afraid that I'm too nice. I second-guess everything and everyone. There have been too many times that I have been brutally honest with people when they've asked me to be and then they start to hate me. I hate that.
Whew! I guess that wasn't too painful. It's just that I don't like discussing myself very often. I find too many other things way more interesting than myself!

My Interests

Singing. Singing some more. Having intelligent conversations with people that don't mind hearing another perspective. Being with people that I care about. Watching a really good movie with great friends. Seeing new cultures, learning other languages, and generally having a good time.Reading and drinking are good past times that I quite enjoy. Good coffee and a good book = excellent afternoon. Good beer and good company = great night. End of story. I like reading books considered "classics".

I'd like to meet:

I really wish that there were more people in St. Louis that I could relate to. It's not that I'm not able to walk in other people's shoes, it just seems that not enough people are able to walk in mine. I'm misunderstood too often. I'd like to meet people who like the idea that there is more to life than just talking about nothing. I want to have people that are truly listening to me and not just waiting for their chance to talk. I like people that are interested in politics; not to attack your ideals, rather they are interested in discussing it in all its complexity. I wish that I had a man in my life that is just looking for their better half and thus becomes my better half in turn.I've put in some fun videos below of weird and interesting stuff that makes me laugh. So, sit back and watch some videos with Domo Kun, Flight of the Conchords, and Kelly. Enjoy!View All Friends | View Blog | Add Comment

Music:

Music is good. I like to listen to it. Don't ask me to define "what kind" of music I like. I like a little of everything. I already feel like I'm being judged by asking me to fill this darn thing out! ;) Well... duh! I sing in an eighties cover band, don't I? That points to some pretty damning evidence, don't you think? I like 80's music... Yup! Guilty as charged! I also like oldies from the 1950's. There are songs that span the ages that I enjoy, but there are some from the same time period that I just don't like at all. I find a lot of the current music that is on the radio to be empty, steady, "safe", junk that is made to make girls shake parts of their bodies in ways that reverse so many of the progress made by suggragettes. It's a shame. Also, if you listen to some of the music playing on my playlist, you'll have the question answered for you! :)

Movies:

Movies... I like almost all of em. Scary ones, funny ones, dramatic ones. I have one criterion that must be met: quality. That's all I ask. Well, I can't lie. Actually, I've been known to watch really terrible movies only because I'm too stubborn to admit that my flavor-of-the-month-actor/actress has finally stumbled onto the wrong script.

Television:

I love domo kun! He watches tv all night, though. Can't be good for him or his rabbit friend! (see video below, he's so cute!) Ummmm. I must admit that I'm a Crackstar Gallact... oops! I mean, BATTLEstar Galactica addict! I really love the show and I just can't help myself. I still re-watch old Twin Peaks episodes. I'm also a big fan of Heroes. Great show.

Books:

Books! Books! Books! If I could have one wish, it would be to own a house with my very own library (well-stocked with classics, journals and books on current issues in international politics and security, all the major newspapers from around the world, and some current fiction and non-fiction leisure books too). I would still leave the house occasionally, but my library would be my escape from this cruel, cruel world.

Heroes:

OK, so there really are heros. I bought Paul Rusesabagina's book and had him sign it at this gathering a little while ago. He has such an amazing story. I hope that if I were ever in such a dire and horrific situation, that I would make it through with even half of the courage and grace that he has. We need more people in the world like him! Some other GREAT people in my life are my brother and his wife and child, ALL of my family (sometimes not ALL), my Peace Corps buddies, my peeps down in Florida, my friends back in Europe, and my host family from Africa. I will always remember my PCV commrades with every breath I have left. Justin and Zack, Awa and my prayers are with you and your families. With me always and you know who you are!

A human element lost

I love animals great and small.  They contribute to our lives in so many wonderous ways.  The chickens that grow plump and fat so that I may have my sweet and sour chicken or my morning oml...
