The Worldwide Placebo Fansite

About Me

Please note that this is a fansite and in no way affiliated with the band, their label or their management company.
Placebo, The Band
Placebo are one of the most successful bands of the last decade. With over 11 million album sales worldwide.
The group was founded when former Luxembourg schoolmates Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal met by accident at South Kensington tube station in 1994 and decided to form a band.
Briefly known as Ashtray Heart, the band quickly settled on the name Placebo. The band could not decide on a drummer at first with Steve Hewitt and Robert Schultzberg alternating on the spot. While Hewitt was the preferred choice, he also had other commitments as drummer for London band Breed, leading to Schultzberg being the drummer when the band signed its contract with Caroline Records. The band officially say that "personal demons" were the reason for his absence. As the other band members were having difficulty getting on with Robert Schultzberg, they persuaded Hewitt to rejoin the band in 1996.
Steve returned to the band after the departure of Robert. The band gained some measure of notoriety for the sexualities of its members and their excessive lifestyles, often chronicled in their songs.
Brian Molko
Brian was born on 10th December, 1972 in Belgium. He attended the International School of Luxemboug before moving to London to study Drama at Goldsmiths College where he Graduated with a Degree. As well as being the Lead Vocalist, Brian plays Guitar, Effects, Harmonica and Percussion.
Stefan Olsdal
Stefan was born on 31st March 1974, in Göteborg, Sweden. He too attended the International School of Luxemboug and played music in his school's orchestra in 1987. He completed his high school education in Sweden and moved to London with his parents, where he attended the Musicians Institute. Supporting with Vocals, Stefan plays Bass, Guitar, and Keyboards.
Steve Hewitt
Steve was born on 22nd March 1971, in Manchester, England. Although Steve appeared on some early demonstration tapes for Placebo, he wasn't able to join the Placebo due to commitments to another band, Breed. Placebo earned their record deal with replacement drummer Robert Schultzberg. Later, as Breed broke up, Robert left Placebo, and Steve became the drummer.

AT HOMO IN VILNIUS

A message from Stefan, after the bands performance at the Upa Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania last week :

“Every year the EU sends a bus around Europe to promote anti-discrimination rallies. This year in May the mayor of Vilnius banned it from entering the capital city of Lithuania. The reasons for this, he said was that it would cause riots and unrest. He has in the past supported actions that have put a stop to pro tolerance of minorities and sexual orientation in the workspace.

As we were touring Russia and the former eastern block we realized from the news and from people we met that this is not uncommon in these areas. We felt that we had to do something. We had a voice and since homosexuality is not illegal, nothing that we were to do would seriously jeopardize the tour.

So for the show in Vilnius, I took to writing ‘HOMO’ on my chest and in front of thousands me and Brian shared a long kiss. It was our act of public display of homosexuality, which isn’t our first time (!) and not something that is very shocking to most of us. But it seems that a lot of work is still needed for this discrimination to disappear. In our way, we did our bit that night.”

APOLOGY TO PORTUGESE FANS

Placebo would like to apologise unreservedly to all the fans who attended the Creamfields festival in Lisbon on Saturday night (19th May). The set was cut short due to Brian losing his voice as an extreme reaction to the cold temperatures. He was literally unable to keep singing. The band left the stage for the encore but decided it was impossible to continue. "We sincerely apologise to all our fans at Creamfields. We understand that it must have seemed confusing as to what was going on and we are sorry we had to cut our set short. Nothing frustrates us more than having on stage problems. In this instance, the problems were simply Brian's voice. We hate to let our fans down but there was just nothing we could do. It's certainly not the way we'd hoped to kick off our European tour!!"

Placebo, Some Trivia
An X-rated video was shot for the song "Protège Moi" but was only released in France along with a magazine of screen shots. It wasn't released anywhere else due to its explicit nature
The band's music features prominently in the South Korean film Tell Me Something, about a serial killer. The killer videotapes his crimes and at one point holds a copy of Without You, I'm Nothing up to the camera before killing his victim.
Brian Molko used to play harmonica and banjo in a blues bar.
Brian has a guitar called "Bitch"
The guitar solo from the song Taste in Men has been occasionally replaced with a saxophone solo as seen in the MCM Cafe Bootleg.
The bassline which introduces Taste in Men bears a striking resemblance to that of Pink Floyd's Let There Be More Light, as well as the Chemical Brothers track 'Block Rockin' Beats'.
One of the B-sides to Pure Morning, called Mars Landing Party is sung in French and is the line "embrasse moi, mets ton doigt dans mon cul" repeatedly, translated into English as "kiss me, stick your finger up my arse."
Placebo's cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" was on the season premier of the 4th season of The O.C.
The band's song "Every You Every Me" was the opening song in the 1999 hit teen movie Cruel Intentions. It was also on the soundtrack to the EA Sports Playstation game F1 2000.
According to fan site sucker-love.com, Molko has a title for a new Placebo album; however, he has not revealed the title and claims that there are no prepared songs.
