I've got fiery fingers, I've got fiery hands

About Me

My arrival in Portland Oregon on August 8th after living in Cleveland for 25 years was terrifying but I'm starting to extricate myself from my hermetic tendancies. I used to identify as Buddhist but I met a guy named Wes who devotes himself to that practice fully and, as a result, I think it is more accurate to suggest that I am enamored of the buddhist concepts that I am aware of-trying to live according to the framework of those notions. Painting was my major in college but I ended up playing music more of the time. I own too many guitars. I started playing mandolin last winter. I'm still wrestling the Pedal Steel... I love to play and sing more than anything else but my self critical nature keeps me from sharing it in a public context very often. 5 years of drawing and painting every day effected my love of all things visual but recently I've been feeling the urge to paint and draw comics again-and thus I have. Check out my comics page if you are so inclined
I would like it very much if I were less of a judgemental freakazoid sometimes. That being said; I admire mastery and pursue those things that by "exquisite art or engine" have attained their highest echelon of quality.
I have this set of ratios that I use to evaluate culture: 90%-8%-2% The "Ninety" is stuff that is by and large dreck and detritus: quotidian banalities which fail to impress because of their ubiquitous nature or tragic underdevelopment. The "Eight" is on it's way. It is either close to being worthwhile or somewhere in the vast grey purgatory of rotating ones hand in the "eh?" motion. The "Two" is where life's promise ignites like a rescue flair in a vast obsidian sea of the typical. This is where I want to be all the time.
There is a little grey cat that I love-McDowell: my furry Son. People either worship him as if he were a tiny deity or plot his demise with elaborate schemes
Fortune has gifted me with several close, wonderful friends who make traversing the country a worthwhile endeavor. They are the family I have "chosen." I envy other men's beards. I like words. I dislike platitudes. I'm a Vegetarian and a Liberal who doesn't read enough. I quote movies that I like despite my best efforts to avoid it. I don't believe that true intimacy can or should exist without love.
My spelling and hand writing are horrifying. One of my favorite professors took me aside once and told me that my handwriting was so bad that it reminded him of the sort of crude markings he had only seen elsewhere in a set of ancient texts that required the extensive knowlege of multiple scholars, including himself, and several years to interpret.
I also should mention that I have no interest whatsoever in Professional sports. I cannot stand them on tv at all-my favorite time of year is that brief window between seasons of hyberbolical athletic drollery that happens around october in Cleveland. An aside: I find that at 25+ my perspective on the nature of identity and relationships with other humans is veering towards the noir' I wonder how the rest of you feel? I used to be chipper and now I can be critical and self doubting. I want to start skateboarding/die trying.
I absolutely abhor "Jazz Vocals"
I have decided that I am like a candy bar; sweet, crunchy, good at first but ultimately unsatisfying. You should have an apple instead
I discovered this quote recently and it reflects my feelings on diplomacy and truth:
"A gentleman is never unintentionally rude." —Oscar Wilde
And then this one sums up my perspective on how I like to spend what time I am allotted:
"Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing."-Teddy Roosevelt

My Interests

Almost all types of Olde Tymey music, specifically Bluegrass, Hill country-blues, and Gospel. I like guitars obviously-slide specifically-played on one's lap & pedal steel too. Mandolin & Banjo. Songwriting is hard but I like trying. I am always trying to get my friends to do stand up comedy because I have a secret interest in it myself. Drawing and reading comics is important to mention as I do both. I love superheroes-superman, green lantern, batman, flash, aquaman, spiderman, the hulk, etc. I'm learning Sign Language in tiny bits here and there. I want to know more about Whales.

I love fruit juices and fruit related snacks. My favorite two types of restaraunts are both ethnic: Ethiopian and Indian. Then there is also Yogurt and Granola. Rootbeer-It's what Thor drinks

I love to watch/attempt skateboarding. Running is good and I want to do it more. I go bouldering all the time now. I love my sweet road bike: Master & Commander

Mario Kart for super NES and or Gameboy is Great! Board games like Clue-Which I've recently become obsessed with, Farkle (Thanks Randi), Backgammon, Pente, Pass the Pigs, Balderdash (Thanks Jessica), Cranium, Mancala and Zombies!!! are favorite things of mine to share with new friends. As a former techno-phobe it would have seemed crazy a few years ago but I'm slowly learning HTML! I am a pacifist but I love UFC (watching it with ben Brosius is the only way to go) Also I must mention KONG.

I'd like to meet:

Doc Watson, I had the chance to but I wouldn't have been able to talk to him, I still regret that- That I didn't try

Lindsey-each day for some fun activity: perhaps a Spanish lesson

I like meeting fellow "musicians" and playing board games with them-or music-what ever they can handle (sometimes the pull of Risk is strong y'all) Oh and I suppose I want to meet a good Pedalsteel/ Dobro teacher so that I can get better/fancy. I'd like to talk to Bob Brozman he seems like a cool dude if ever there was one. Any body who can help get me a job drawing comics professionally. Jimmy Ruffin. The ghost of Bill Monroe and Captain Ahab. And of course... these guys

Jon Brion And this girl pictured with him...Fiona Something-or-other

My Beloved Toby Zachary Ziegler

Anchorman
Robocop
Both Spiderman movies
(I'm Peter Parker minus the powers)
MOBY-DICK starring Gregory Peck!
Other favorites include:
the shawshank redemption
joe vs. the volcano

Pirate stuff
cabin boy
the crimson pirate
pirates of the caribbean (the first one)
I'm a hopeless romantic with a soft spot for comedies/dramas of that variety:

Abrams) The wonder that is Clone High.

My brother Aaron bought me episodes of Ducktales on DVD and they are weird now that I am old enough to think about those things you might ignore as a kid. Good but weird.

Books:

I love to read-I have favorites but I want suggestions :)

MOBY DICK! This book is a string of beautiful poetry from start to finish. The metaphors, the language, the characters, the insane attention to detail and the arch of the story, it is all elegant. I love this book more than I can express.

The Women of Brewster Place: that book blew my mind. For real though- I know it sounds like some dimestore romance novel but in actuallity it is a very moving and lush portrayal of urban african american life as mediated through the experiences/narratives of several different generations of black women...I loved it.

I'm reading "Walden" by Thoreau and it warms my heart of hearts.

Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen.

Heroes:

Kelly Joe Phelps is number one.
Then Mr. Sam Beam
My dear Fiona
This Man of Hardened Steel aka Rollins
The HULK and Dave Chappelle are tied right now.
Will Henry & Chris Sherron: These fine southern gentlemen are too damn good. Daniel Dove-gets the Love.
I also love Alan Lomax and what he has done for the culture of this country. The magnitude and importance of his work eclipses the possiblity of ever showing him an appropriate honor, as none that I can imagine would be enough to do it justice.
My friends-Nathan, Bob, Ben, Roy, Natallie, Scotty,Royal, Petrauskas, Wes, David Phillips, Jeremy, Greggy Z, Laura, Josh, Michalba, Karlee Kaza, Christa, Colleen, Saskia, Joe, Pete, Daryl, Dave and Alleyn.

Lastly and most importantly; MY DAD-Who elicited respect and never demanded it, my biggest hero and mentor, brilliant and strong. I miss him everyday.
