9 on Bali was formed as a trio of Dans. Veteran home taper Dan Susnara & Dan Sweigert (Star Period Star) wanted to create music that mixed indie pop gamelan kebyar, progressive rock, psychedelic music, tropicalia, and jazz. Dan VanSchindel (Star Period Star) joined on drums and they released their debut CD "Kite Hawker on the Beach." Ryan Humm of Splendid magazine described the epic "My Poor Old Blue Projector" this way, "Listening to 'MPOBP' with headphones is a tremendous experience, and allows the song's just-so layers to interact while remaining distinguishable and clear." He added, "Overall, 'Kite Hawker' is astonishingly original in scope and deserves a spot in any well-rounded record collection." The two Dans recruited two new keyboardists, an old friend Jim Molina (That People's Sleep), and Savannah resident Pat Hamilton (Sinister Moustache) to capture more of the gamelan sound. They released a CD/DVD called "Sanur" which they debuted on a mini-tour of the Southeast in August, 2007. Currently 9 on Bali is working on another full length CD. The live shows feature a variety of exotic and home made instruments along with the traditional "rock gear."
