About Me

Trombonist and composer Mark Patterson began music studies with his father, bassist/trombonist Dick Patterson; teenage years, he studied with Dick McGee, Dale Bruning, Tasso Harris, Ron Washington, and (importantly but not formally) Spike Robinson. He continued at the University of Denver (BA) with Dr. Donald Keats, Joe Docksey, and David Caffey, and, in New York, in the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop with Bob Brookmeyer, Manny Albam, and Jim McNeely.Mark works free-lance in a variety of settings: jazz groups both small and large, such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra; symphony orchestra, the New York Pops; wind ensemble, the Gotham Wind Symphony; trombone quartet, Area 51 (with Jim Pugh, Mike Christianson, and Matt Ingman); on tour, recently with Barbra Streisand; Broadway shows, currently, Spamalot; recording studios, recently, Donald Fagen, Morph the Cat; movie soundtracks; in concerts, as with Audra McDonald, or the Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble; and as a soloist (with the Ridgefield Symphony; and with Clark Terry and Sir Roland Hanna). Mark's recent writing commissions came from the Westchester Jazz Orchestra and the Gotham Wind Symphony.Teaching appointments at New York University, City College, and various summer jazz camps keep Mark alert.Since 2000 Mark has worked with the jazz sextet Convergence (playing and writing), and that group keeps him extremely alert. Currently the group converges for a steady first Friday in Denver at Dazzle (needing airline sponsorship but progressing well nonetheless!).Mark and his family have lived in Nyack since 1990.
