Tuesday, 18th September 2007, 14:36
Been sick in bed for 5 days now. Today was the first time I actually put on some jeans and got out. Otherwise my days have been filled with watching movies on my laptop and sleeping, sipping gingerale and eating melbatoast...*sigh* i want this to be OVER! Now im back in bed, and eating little special foods to trick my stomach into thinking that everthying is just fine....tomorrow our furniture comes for the new apartment - lisa has been working really hard to clean and paint everything in my absence. the days of friedrich-ebert are coming to an end...
Wednesday, 12th September 2007, 22:48
Second day of painting done....so tired. I hope its all worth it - i guess well be moving most of the things in to the "new" place on saturday - with all the "newly" purchased furniture. Tomorrow will be mostly packing - with some painting....ahhhh, cant wait till its all over.

currently sitting in my parents' kitchen - surfing around a little here in koeln (cologne) quite the party city, im hearing all sorts of drunken singing happening outside on the street below. just taking it easy - eating well, playing some halo with l&m and talking with my parents- and of course MUNCHKIN - yeah its a good time. going out to take pictures tomorrow - eager to get back to leipzig somehow - somehow not.
Tuesday, 21st August 2007, 23:08
Im heading to Cologne. Taking a break from Leipzig for a while. Change of scenery, change of melodies, change of audience.

Favourite Actor ATM :
Ok i just finished a bunch of reviews, but Im too lazy to look for a bunch of covers to put on these ones - so you are going to have to just make do with the titles in bold - as always, excuse the spelling errors, I cant be bothered to check them either (im too busy watching movies!)
The Number 23
Actually, unfortunately, it was a little disappointing - I thought that this was going to be a real "mess with your head thriller" but it didnt really mess with mine, although the plot twists were good, they were also expected - I think the german movie "23" is better (if we are comparing movies that are circling their stories around the number 23, because thats about where the similarities end - but "The Number 23" seems to be a movie that you either like, or you dont, so dont take my opinion of it - go see it for yourself. After seeing this, I almost want Jim Carrey to be in one of the new Sin City movies - hes got a great aged face when its lit the right way ;)
Live Free or Die Hard
McClane is back. The movie is very good, very fast and very tough ;) but I do have some critisms...I think that the movie should have taken its time a little more getting into the action (like the other movies) there wasnt much "character building" at the beginning - okok, maybe after 3 movies this isnt needed anymore, but its what makes McClane, erm, McClane...but thats just a small thing. Why couldnt they just give John some hair?
I think that there was still room for some good McClane style writing - some good one liners....ie, after the scene with the plane (sry I wont say anymore) he should have said something like : what? no one else saw that? gimmie a break...! (instead he just lets out a "wooo" in amazement that he survived....okok...I think it would have been really funny if Warlock was 15. haha...but Kevin Smith is good too - Maggie Q was like a übermensch that wouldnt die...(anyone else find that weird?)
I also didnt like the way the baddy dies, it should be more memorable - Timothy Olyphant btw. is going to be Agent 47 in the videogame-to-movie of Hitman. Justin Long is quite funny, as kinda a real-Neo type character I thought ;) and ok, my biggest critism is, that with PG-13 (although it was the same rating here in Germany) is that John McClane wasnt as beat up as he should be - or that he sometimes WAS! I mean, blood seemed to disappear, wounds disappeared....He should have looked a lot more messed up by the end..
But the idea was really cool (i mean the terrorist attack) and John McClane is definately still the man - they are going to have to create a new type of genre for these flicks : über-action-movies. But for me, they really have to make (in the next two years) DIE HARD 5 and then they could retire the character - because come on, we all want 1 more- with this new McClane - right?!
Black Book
I took this movie as not a historical recollection of events from WWII but instead a Verhoeven-thriller set in Holland, during WWII. Its not the bleak and grey WWII-europe that we are given in so many recent movies set around that time, its very colourful - there are some tricky plot twists and the subtitles are quite quick. It shows both sides of all the different groups : the "normal" dutch - the nazis - the resistance. There are some tough scenes in this movie so be prepared (not for younger audiences) - and I found that it was a little long - Carice van Houten is rumored to be in Bond 22 - and her acting was pretty good (and she can obviously speak at least german, dutch and english). Ok, take a look!
From Dusk till Dawn III : Hangmans Daughter
Not as bad as FDTDII which was so so terrible, I dont know why Robert Rodriguez even put his name on that one - I couldnt even finish it - I had to turn it off (that really doesnt happen very often). But 3 is a little better, and at least its written by Rodriguez, and so it had a little more of a story. But as I was watching it I felt disappointed that the movie was so poorly acted, directed and underbudgeted....because it does have some unreached-potential. But it is watchable (if youve got nothing else to do).
Final Fantasy VII : Advent Children
Ok, story aside...this movie is cool....I mean, REALLY cool computer graphics, I dont know why they dont make more flicks like this, they could animate all sorts of wicked fantasy novels in this style, and you wouldnt even have to really find actors, it would be great - half way though the movie you are introduced to a bunch of characters that they could have left out and made te movie a little more simple and it probably would have really caught on and become a cult-classic, but instead the introduction of the characters and the strange story line, makes it a little too "video-game like" but whatever! look at the title! hahaha, yeah, but if you want to see insane fights and cool effects, swords, guns, motorcycles, caped-resuers etc. I think this movie is great (just next time this group wants to make a movie they need to hire a. a writer and b. a director....and then the movie would be wicked!
Running with scissors
Another weird movie, that seems to be fitting to a new style of what I would say are "hollywood-art-house" (oe. little miss sunshine, hard candy, thumbsucker, elephant) I dont know, i just think its kinda boring at times, theres nothing really wrong with the movie, but the story was just a little boring, and it didnt really seem to go anywhere - I dont know, you can say what you like, I just dont like it.
Fracture
A little disappointing, because I didnt think it was as clever as it could have been, though Ryan Gosling plays his role well, and Anthony Hopkins is perfect (as always) - it just didnt seem to have the bite that "Primal Fear" had. Has anyone else noticed Anthony Hopkins' accents in recent movies? I think hes doing slight accents in all his characters, this movie was a little irish (in my opinion) & I think he might have done others in 'Proof' and 'Bobby' and he obviously had a southern accent in 'All Kings Men' and a New Zealander accent in 'The World's Fastest Indian'....any thoughts? -anyways, the movie is alright, with a good twist at the end...but could have been better.
The Proposition
A good australian-western, that didnt get much publicity, which is strange because its well written and well acted...Guy Pierce maybe isnt good at being a lead actor but it has a good list of not-unknown actors.
Hot fuzz
Do I really need to write something about this ? I think everyone knows that this is good - and needs to be seen - so that they hopefully make more movies like this! if you want a comedy-action movie, this is for you - if you liked Shawn of the Dead, this is for you, if youve not seen SotD, then see it, and then see this! (ps. was anyone reminded also of hints towards french cinema ? ie. Brotherhood of the Wolf and The Crimson Rivers II?)
I cant wait to see what these Brits come up with next...Ok, thats all im going to say to this : WATCH!
The Big White
A strange dark-crime-comedy...with nutty characters like the desperate travel-agent Robin Williams his funny-terrets suffering Holly Hunter, two friendly hitmen, an obsessive insurance worker his psychic girlfriend - all wrapped in the snow of the deep Alaskian winter. And its pretty good.
The Fountain
No three sentence plot outline can ready you for this film, it cannot be condensed that easily..."wow" is what comes to mind for me, its very sad and very serious, but at the same time visually stunning - Hugh Jackman amazes me - he seems to have completely avoided the "comicbook-adaptation" career curse and landed himself some really powerful roles lately & he does some amazing acting in this movie, truely. But this movie is quite tricky, at least if you want to make 100% sense of. I have my own opinion about what the 3 stories mean - if anyone else has seen this, I would really like to know what you thought....! I really enjoyed it anyhow, but you have to be one of those movie-watchers that just accept things as they are and not ask questions though the movie (btw. if you do this this is überannoying....so stop.)
Seraphim Falls
A interesting story, that starts suddenly into the action, Pierce Brosnan being hunted by Liam Neeson (among others) - why? well, you wont know that right at the beginning, you have to take the story as it comes (see "The Fountain" review for more info on that). Most of the movie is pretty stright forward, with some really strange happenings (one with a horse comes to mind...) and towards the end, it gets almost surreal. I dont want to give to much away, the ending...is especially interesting, if you are into that kinda thing. This is not a stright up western!
The Good German
Heres a film in which Toby McGuire furthers himself from the heroic Peter Parker - but hes not the main character, so im just going to stop there - the movie wasnt gripping enough, though it did have a cool look to it, the film noir style mixed with war film...but somehow it just wasnt enough :/ I really wanted it to be good, because ive become quite a George Clooney fan, and who isnt a Cate Blanchett fan ? (who i think is currently the best actress) Shame, it could have been so much better.
Get Rich Or Die Tryin'
Not that good, but not as bad as many of the reviews make it out to be. It was strange that towards the end it didnt really deal with how his cd really finally got out there - and it was also obvious that his story had been censored to make himself seem more sympathetic; almost as if they were afraid to show what kind of things he did. It just didnt feel honest - but then again, what do you expect from a biopic about a person that is currently still living, ;)
Sideways
As in "About Schmidt" Payne creates a perfectly honest and painfully lonesome romantic comedy/drama. Paul Giamatti acts amazing (!) in this movie - unfortunately he didnt win any big-time awards for it...timing and pacing were very good (the trailers all made it seem slow...(which is why it took me so long to finally see it) except for the one that finally made me it look funny - so i watched it!). I think this movie might even get better as you get older, so if you watch it again when you are 35+ its going to have a totally different impact on you. Im not going to rush out to get it on DVD or anything, but Ill be sure to rent it sometime down the road.
The Science Of Sleep
A wonderfully funny and original movie full of strange fantasy - Gael GarcÃa Bernal - is so great and quirky! Strange thing was that I watched this after a few drinks late at night, and feel asleep during the movie , just to wake up again and not understand if i was sleeping - then I went to bed, (which I didnt remember) and then in the night I woke up and wandered around...it was very weird, i think it got into my sub-conscience....! haha....well, I really enjoyed it, and the soundtrack was pretty good too.
The Last Kiss
Not that good - it seemed to me like I had heard it all before, the whole "Im not sure if I like the way my life it going blah blah blah" or "is this really what i want" blah blah....it just seemed so bland and monotonus, everyone goes though this, but its something that you dont really want to be reminded of - unless its in a really tricky and smart way....just having it written down and acted out, ach the movie is just "BLAH"
Blades Of Glory
Anchorman meets Napoleon Dynamite ? Heck yes! But wait, its not as good as either of them - its more like Dodgeball meets Benchwarmers....with Will Ferrel...still has some pretty funny moments, but no where near as good as Ancorman (but better then Dodgeball....maybe) But for all my whining - good fun - a few very good jokes.
Flags of our Fathers
Clint Eastwood is becoming a amazing director, the story is very interesting, and forces you to draw comparisons to recent events in history - some of the silhouettes are so stunning, you will wnat to take them out and frame them for their photographic worth. Adam Beach, playing a role very close to this in Windtalkers, is much better -
the main theme of the movie is : what is a hero, but there are many different themes thoughout the film - I think its better than Saving Private Ryan.
Letters from Iwo Jima
It does not show the exact same events of Flags from the other side (as many people believe) but it does have a few intercrossing moments with Flags - thematically the movie isnt that far from Flags either - but this movie seems more interesting and more personal than flags, the story itself is more person. Once again this shows a trend with Hollywood movies (thanks to Mel Gibson) to keep foreign languages in films and not be afraid to let the whole movie run without english ;)
Renaissance
I saw this in French with English subtitles, (since I thought that was the original language) since then I have read many discussions on the net that argue that it may be a french movie / english movie (both tracks as "original") But Ill just leave you with that little bit of confusion! After seeing this Sin City looks more like a normal movie. With bombastic classical score, Ã la Bond or other action movies, intelligent and strong - Funny, on the back of the DVD they compared it to Blade Runner and Metropolis, and thats exactly what I said after I was finished watching it! A film-noir crime story in a futuristic corperate run Paris : SEE THIS!
The Hitcher
Vast and beautiful depictions of New Mexico (but thats where Im going to end my praise of this movie) - it seemed to senseless - (later, a quick line from Sean Bean confirmed that) did anyone see the web by the girls face when they are hiding? Not only was the web from a halloween decorations store, but the spider was clearly plastic!! The whole time Im thinking why did Sean Bean do this movie ? It would have been much better if it had alot less budget, and therefore more carnal, B-movie style gore-slasher flick - the pathetic story would then be, as a B-movie, completely forgiveable.
Curse of the Golden Flower
"Hero" and "House of the Flying Daggers" were very much asian-martial-art-ballet's if you will...and very good for it. But 'Golden Flower' seems almost Shakesperian in its story telling, and still keeps alot of the incredible visuals of the previously mentioned movies. Though there isnt much real ACTION or martial arts in this movie, it somehow seems thicker, or deeper then the others. I really enjoyed it, and will add it to my DVD collection.
Layer Cake
A very cool movie, stylized but believibly realistic about drug-dealers in England - somehow reminded me of Crank and Smoking Aces though they dont have much in common, but there was a good balance between seriousness / comedy that might resemble the other films, with a shocker ending (at least thats what I thought)
Smoking Aces
I didnt know what to expect from this film. I didnt know much about it at all, I only knew that it was directed by the guy who made NARC - it looked funky, and Ben Affleck was in it (but was happy to find out that he dies quite quickly, and quite funny) - but right from the credits at the beginning, I was into this movie, it just seemed like fun. Its not epic-drama or a deep-action movie, but its watchable. Much more accessable then NARC (which I have on DVD but by no means consitutes enjoyment for this film) - it feels almost like something Tarantino might have directed...-if the writing had been a little cooler.
Master Matt Miyagi's Movie Rating System :

007: Everything or Nothing
An amalgamation of bond movies, all the great stuff, good over the shoulder view, wicked animation and cutscenes, and a good story, and the participation of Pierce Brosnan and Willem Dafoe, what more do you want? Heidi Klum? Ok, shes in there too....the only thing I would want more from this, is a skiing level, or some winter racing level thingy like in the good ol' bond movies. They should keep making these games though, even if Pierce isnt doing the movies, his FACE could do the games. I hate that they keep trying to change the games, now that they have a winner...they should just make a new story for it. Oh well, in the meantime, Ill keep playing this one, off and on.
