Mariachi Alma De Los Angeles

Deep in the heart of East Los Angeles, CA, is a group of young people ready to demonstrate their deep appreciation and dedication to their Latino heritage. These young musicians embody what many other musicians look to accomplish in their lives: the love of the music and the respect for its deep meaning. Mariachi Alma de Los Angeles came about with the reuniting of Mariachi Los Arrieros de Wilson High School, CA in the winter of 2004. Although at the time Los Arrieros had reunited under grave circumstances the death of a loved one slowly but surely, the old Arrieros decided to reunite under a new name and a new image. By changing their high school groups name to something the whole group felt a connection to, Alma de Los Angeles found the courage to pursue a new career in the Mariachi world. Mariachi Alma de Los Angeles has seven key members. Playing in the rhythm section we have Gabriel I. Meza on guitarron, Juan M. Hernandez on vihuela and, Jose L. Callela on guitar. All three are previously members of Mariachi Los Arrieros. Former Mariachi Los Arrieros members also include John Vargas on trumpet, who left the original Mariachi Los Arrieros in 2003 and Leticia Callela on violin. Also a former Mariachi Reynas member, Ruby Gutierrez on trumpet, has been amazingly helpful with all the recordings as well as performances.One of the exceptional things about Alma de Los Angeles is that despite life conflicts, school schedules and day-jobs, the members of Alma de Los Angeles manage to make time in order to rehearse and perform this amazing music. Less than a year old, Mariachi Alma de Los Angeles has already been privileged enough to perform at places such as La Fonda, the home of Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. The group has also shown its own love for the community by performing at Roosevelt High School, L.A., CA, for the dance group Alma Mestiza and by participating in citywide events such as Cinco de Mayo, La Placita Olveras Hispanic Heritage Month activities, and so on. With any luck, we shall hear a lot more about Mariachi Alma de Los Angeles for years to come.Recently, we have had issues wth real life conflicts. So, we have not had the time necessary to finish up other recordings. Ruby Gutierrez has just graduated with her degree in Recording Engineer and her A.A. Leticia Callela got into CalArts and just moved into the dorms in September of 2006. Gabriel Meza has just changed his night job to a day job and has begun living his life as a bachelor in a new bachelor's pad. Jose Callela is returning to CalArts as a BFA2 in Theater and John Vargas is returning to Pasadena City College to finish his AA and transfer, location unknown. Finally, Miguel Hernandez has just had his first child and is dealing with first time dad issues.
