global shtetl band plays kukaratshas -- From Latino-America to Eastern Europe: Yiddish Mambos for the Global Shtetl
This music tells stories about musical journeys, from Brooklyn to Lublin, from Jerusalem to Havanna, from Nuremberg to Buenos Aires. Stories about being a stranger at home, and being at home abroad. Stories about by-gone days, about life today and tomorrow's dreams.
It all started when we first heard Seymour Rechtzeit (1912-2002) singing "Miami Beach Rumba" by Irving Fields (1915-): A Yiddish crooner and radio star singing with the voice of the great Mambo singers! And we imagined Xavier Cugat (1900-1990), "El Rey de la Rumba", standing next to Seymour, and shaking his maracas...
And then, there was the song "Basavilbaso, shtetele du mayns", written by Jevel Katz (1902-1940) in Argentina at the same time when the legendary Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) sang his tango canción "Mi Buenos Querido".
Then we discovered so many more stories, so many more kukaratshas -- Yiddish Mambos, Boleros, Cha-cha-chás...
Today, we listen to the old 78 r.p.m. records, dreaming about the time of the Mamboniks. And we start to write new music and new Yiddish words.
"Bartek's accordion playing: Every single tone has mud on its shoes, even when he's just replacing an entire Mambo orchestra. And Daniel's deep drumming, telling new stories, playing Cuban rhythms within Moskowitz' khusidl. Milian's singing and songwriting -- he's so deep into Yiddish music and, at the same time, an excellent Mambonik!"
What is the future, what is the past? In Lublin, in the Museum of "Teatr NN", we listened to a recording of the former cemetery attendant singing "vu iz dos gesele", in memory and in honour of his old shtetl. So much life: Oy, a sakh lebn...
Let's dance the mambo, Margarita, the heymish one!
