AEK has an outstanding reputation in the sub-sports of Volleyball, Basketball, Boxing and of course Football. AEK FC is one of the best, most popular and well recognized Greek Football teams in the world. The group of refugees who formed this historic team derived from Constantinople and came into Greece after the overthrow of their nation in the West coast of Turkey in 1922.The Byzantine emblem is the two headed eagle which symbolises the domination of Byzantine Empire of the East and West. The origin of this crest inspired AEK to proudly adopt this amazing mythological two headed creature as their official emblem. Even the team's colours present such meaning; AEK’s optimism and distant homeland is represented in Yellow whilst the pain of generation and old neighbourhood (suggesting the loss of Constantinople) is represented as Black. AEK have an incredible history of players, fans, memorable moments and achievements. The Agia Sofia church in Constantinople continues to be an important icon for both AEK and Greece in general as it was taken over by Turkey on 29/5/1453 although the Greek nation will forever continue to try to regain their historic church.AEK has taken pride and pleasure in upholding it's reputation to be a major athletic union of which has received 27 national titles. These titles include the following: 11 Championships: (1939, 1940, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1978, 1979, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994) 13 Cups: (1932, 1939, 1949, 1950, 1956, 1964, 1966, 1978, 1983, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2002) 1 Super Cup: (1989) 1 League Cup: (1991)Some of the loudest and most fanatical AEK fans were found at Gate 21 of AEK’s home stadium (Nikos Goumas) in Nea Filadelfeia which suggested this number would be a significant one for AEK. The creation of Gate 21 in 1975 led to the establishment in 1982 that will be known as one of the most incredibly devoted Football fan clubs in the world identified as Original 21. Original 21 has made its way across the globe, situated all over the world; from Greece to Germany, France To England, America To Australia, (just to name a few). The title ‘Original 21’ is a common one used in the AEK vocabulary. This fan club is an incredibly relevant feature of AEK and will remain a well recognized, appreciated part of this amazing Football Club.
