Music was very present in my family life from the choir at church to the family gatherings. I attended O'keeffe Elemetary there I played in the Jazz band playing the trumpet. I met Steve Poindexter (1975,best friend),and we started DJing the school Sock Hops. We met Ken Samuels (sounds man) who introduced us to Kirk Townsend (Sweet K The DJ). At that time he was playing at Mendell and thats when the Mendell Bi-Level was formed. In 1979 Steve & I started playing all the catholic & public highschools in chicago and surrounding suburbs and got a nice following.MY mentors were Sam Chatman, Tony, Bitoy, Frankie
Knuckles, Tony Hatchett(& Chosen Few Family), Chip Veasley, & especially J. R. Dionte'. Partying at places like the orginal Warehouse on 326 W. Jefferson & the Power House @ 1015 N. Halsted I knew then that my love for the music was a part of my soul. Frankie Knuckles advised me to take the parties to the masses, he said people need to know about the music(House)so Steve and I separated and took it to new forms. (1982)Steve had R.S.S.Corp. and I had Wall To Wall Sounds. R.S.S. were Steve Poindexter, Chip Veasley, David Allen, Tony "Sundance" Evans,& Vincent McCoy. Wall To Wall Sounds consisted of John Hunt, Leonard "Remix" Rroy, Ken Samuels, James Derek, Lil John, J.C. From 1982-1984 I played numerous parties and also did promotions for The Rink Zone for J.R. Dionte'(1983-1984)while at that time The Rink Zone was a happening spot with weekly resident DJ Lil John. In 1984 Steve & I with the help of Ursula Stewart formed "Gucci Promotions". Later on in 1986 MeMe Hughes (Ms.Gucci/Mizz MeMe)became our hostess and from there things took off like a rocket. Our mission is and has always been to host events that catered to a progressive audience utilizing top quality facilities for House music theme parties such as The Original Pleasure Dome, Hyde Park Racketball Club, Congress Hotel, Power House, South Shore Cultural Center,AKA's, Sauers, Blue Gargoyle, & The Beat Box. Some of Our theme parties were Mistle Toe Madnes(85),Bring Down The Walls(86), Navy Pier(87),King Holiday(88), Celebrity DJ Basketball Game@Mendell, Rivera Thanksgiving Day Marathon w/Rob Thompson(89), Back To Life(90), Xmas Party@ Club Liquid(97), Terry Hunter B-day/Mardi Gras Bash(2005). DJ's that started out and began their careers with Gucci were Gene Hunt, Terry Hunter, & Ron Carroll. Our Headliners were always Ron Hardy, Andre Hatchett, & Pharris Thomas(Who also played for Wall To Wall Sounds(84)). Frankie Knuckles and Farley Keith(Farley JackMaster Funk) were headliners also. Lil Louis played for Gucci Promotions for one of our theme parties " When 2 Tribes"(89)@ The Racketball Club. Gucci Promotions family & I brought our theme events alive through our innovative street saavy team headed by Steve Poindexter, Ms. Gucci/Mizz MeMe,Tiawan Singleton, Mikey Lewis, Big Darnell, & a host of others who worked hard in making this promotional group the #1 top promotional organization in the city for young adult parties from 1984-1992. We will continue to evolve for the love of Disco/House music for generations to come. Thank you for supporting Gucci Promotions & John Hunt.
