What is Lipodissolve? LIPODISSOLVE is a minimally invasive medical procedure performed by using a series of injections to dissolve away persistent fat deposits. It has also been referred to as injection lipolysis or spot fat reduction. LIPODISSOLVE has been practiced across the world for more than 12 years on over 17,000 patients receiving over 56,000 injections. It utilizes a mixture of two compounds, Phosphatidylcholine (PC) and Deoxycholate (DC). PC is marketed in Europe under the trade name Lipostabil (Aventis) for the approved treatments of liver disease, fat embolism & hyperlipidemia. PC is derived from Lecithin, which is a naturally occurring phospholipid that composes over 50% of cell membranes in humans. It is derived from soybeans. DC is the most commonly occurring bile acid and functions in our body to help digest the fat we eat. DC is the solvent that dissolves PC for injection.

Am I a candidate for LIPODISSOLVE? You could be a candidate for LIPODISSOLVE if you have small superficial fat deposits that have been resistant to diet and exercise. LIPODISSOLVE is not a treatment for weight loss and should not be considered for the purpose of weight loss. LIPODISSOLVE should not be performed on obese patients or patients with medical contraindications. Contraindications include allergies to PC, DC, Soy Products, Soybeans, and Benzyl Alcohol, as well as patients with chronic liver or kidney disease, pregnancy, nursing mothers, immunocompromised, and patients on blood thinners like coumadin or Plavix.
How does LIPODISSOLVE work? Research is still ongoing, but a current theory is PC/DC combination mixes with the lipids on the fat cell membranes. This process is mediated through an immune response which in turn causes the fat cell over time to rupture. Next your body cleans up the debris from the ruptured cells and collagen is produced which can lead to some smoothing and tightening of the overlying skin. The exact mechanism is still being investigated through ongoing research and studies
How often and will it last? Results will vary from different sites and patient to patient. Greater than 95% of patients will see a significant response in 3 or less treatments, occasionally up to 3 more treatments may be needed to see a significantly measurable effect. The fat that has been destroyed will not return. Other fat cells in the treated areas may increase in size if you gain weight in the future. Observational data shows that generally with some overall weight gain, LIPODISSOLVE will maintain its effect.
Is LIPODISSOLVE safe? YES, it is considered very safe. 75 physicians from over 17 countries have participated in an observational survey. Over 17,000 treated patients using over 56,000 injection sessions using PC based compounds were reported. The average number of sessions per patients was 3.24. Face and Neck usually required 2 treatments will the rest of the sites averaged 3 treatments. No deaths or hospitalizations have been related to LIPODISSOLVE or its side effects. The most common complication related to LIPODISSOLVE is patient dissatisfaction secondary to less than expected aesthetic improvement. Other complications of hyperpigmentation (0.0021%), itching/late hives (0.0003%) and persistent pain beyond 2 weeks (0.015%) were reported. No reports of chronic skin irritation, infection, skin necrosis, open wounds or permanent skin contour irregularities were noted.
Does LIPODISSOLVE hurt & are there other side effects? Most patients experience some mild discomfort during the procedure. Only 8% of patients reported significant pain during the injection process. The peak of pain noticed was at 30 minutes post-injection, reported by 17.3% of patients. Only 5% of patients complained of pain at 24 hours. Erythema was most common at 30 minutes post-injection. 72% of patients noted transient erythema from injection up to 24 hours post procedure, but rarely after 24 hours. Stinging and burning was reported 90.6%, but only 20% reported this at 1 hour and only 1% noted symptoms of stinging beyond 24 hours. Swelling was reported 88% and was dose related. Swelling starts as early as 30 minutes, peaks at 1-3 days post injection and less than 10% reported significant swelling at 1 week. Bruising was noted 84% and peaked at 1 week post injection. Only 0.7% of the bruising was noted to persistent into the second week. Nausea occurred in less than 10%, peaking at 24 hours and no reports were noted beyond 48 hours. The incidence and severity of nausea was felt to be related to higher dose injections. Diarrhea was noted in 2% of patients was resolved in less than 24 hours and was related to higher doses. Dizziness was noted in 5% of patients and was universally resolved in less than 2 hours. A rare incidence of hematomas and hives were noted. How long does it take? Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes or less. Treatments on the same area can be repeated as soon as 2 weeks, but 4-6 weeks is the preferred interval. Other areas of desired treatment may be performed as soon as 1-2 weeks after another treated area. How long is the recovery? Results vary depending upon the area treated and individual patient. Vigorous exercise is generally avoided for 2-3 days with a return to normal activity after this time.Who performs the injections? All the injections are performed by Board Certified Physicians. Dr. Schallert is Board Certified in Family Medicine since 1998. He trained for LIPODISSOLVE at the only course certified by the International Meso-Lipotherapy Society. Training was performed by several American Physicians that are leaders in LIPODISSOLVE research and training, as well as several International Physicians that are pioneers in the study of Mesotherapy and Lipotherapy.
