About Me

AMIS is an independent promoter of artists' work in moving image and sound in Nottingham. So far this has included a screening at Broadway in 2006 of experimental films from 1917 - 1976. More recently, again at Broadway, we showed Shoot Shoot Shoot: British Structural Films of the 1960s & 70s, and Describing Form, a touring programme of artists' films about sculpture. In collaboration with artists at Stand Assembly we have put on occasional nights of film food and installation called Annexinema. These nights run on a more ad-hoc basis, and we encourage submissions for future events.

I'd like to meet:

People who are enthusiastically, creatively, intellectually engaged with moving image and sound. AMIS endorses the events listed on the calendar below, which take place in Nottingham, unless otherwise stated.

Movies:

We have shown work by the following artists: Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, Marcel Duchamp, Stephen Dwoskin, Gill Eatherley, Peter Gidal, Malcolm Le Grice, Jeff Keen, Kurt Kren, Owen Land, Len Lye, William Raban, Lis Rhodes, John Smith, Stan Vanderbeek, Chris Welsby

Books:

The following books provide a good introduction to artists' moving image and sound, though they tend to privilege the former. There are many other books covering more specific movements, and individuals. Should you want further recommendations, please get in touch with AMIS.

(Cutting Edge: Art-Horror and the Horrific Avant-Garde: Joan Hawkins)

Less written about is sound art (phonic art, sonic art, call it what you will), but a good place to start might be:

also recommended is the excellent magazine Vertigo:
