Turkish musician, jazz drummer
He started playing drums at the age of 8 and made his debut when he was only 13, performing at an open theatre in Izmir. In the early 80’s Oztoplu moved to Istanbul where his real professional musical career started, playing together with many prominent musicians at concerts and festivals. His performances were also broadcasted on national television. In 1993 he took a quantum leap and moved to Berlin. There he studied with the world’s leading drummers such as Dave Weckl, Chat Wackerman, Billy Kilson and Heins Hermann. He attended many important workshops, including those given by Mike Stern, Branford Marsalis, Vinnie Caliuta, Jeff 'Tain' Watts, and Chanquito. During his Berlin years, Oztoplu performed at concerts, festivals and the country’s major jazz clubs. He toured in Germany with Sixty Five Horns Ensemble and African Big Band Project. On his return to Turkey, Oztoplu joined the Kursat And Trio who he currently plays with. They have given several highly acclaimed concerts throughout Turkey, collaborating with such musicians as Tuna Otenel, Sibel Kose, Imer Demirer, Neset Ruacan, Onder Focan, Fatih Erkoc, Burcin Buke, Alp Ersonmez, and Sarp Maden.
In 2000 he participated in the European Jazz Festival performing in Kiel, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Rotterdam. Most recently he has been performing with a symphony orchestra established by musicians of the State Opera and the State Symphony Orchestras.
