Lord of the Flies, presented by the Solihull Society of Arts Drama Section. Directed by Sean Kavanagh and Thomas Faulkner .
Lord of the Flies was originally a novel by William Golding, written shortly after the second world war, and adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams in 1995. The play is set moments after a plane crash throws a group of schoolboys onto a desert island. At first the boys co-operate, attempting to maintain civilisation and a sense of social order. But as time progesses, the boys instincts take a more brutal, savage twist.
The play is being presented at The Edge Theatre at Alderbrook School by the Solihull Society of Arts Drama Section. It is the debut production of young directors Thomas Faulkner and Sean Kavanagh, both 18. The cast is mainly made up of younger A-Level Students, attending either Solihull Sixth College or Stratford-upon-Avon College, which both Sean and Thomas attend.
Sean is no stranger to Alderbrook's fantastic modern drama facilities, as he attended the school before moving onto college alongside cast members Emily Bulman and Jessica Carter.
Thomas studied Lord of the Flies at Alderbrook's neighbouring school, Tudor Grange, which was also attended by cast members Gareth Edwards, Amy Dewsnap, and Hannah Bould. The enthusiasm and enjoyment he got out of studying the novel at GCSE was the crucial decision in choosing the play to direct.
"The novel explores many different themes which slots perfectly into a play format. There are many fantastic dramatic moments which creates a brilliant atmosphere in the theatre."
"I learnt a lot from studying the novel, as well as getting a large amount of enjoyment out of it. So it was a natural choice to direct."
"The cast is young and full of energy. It's a perfect example of how much potential the theatre has to portray so many different themes, arguments, and emotions."
