About Me

I've learned two lessons in life:
1) Never say never.

2) Given the right circumstances, we're all capable of doing things we thought we'd never do.

Everyone has heard these cliches before, but they're very true. I'll explain in more detail if I know you well enough.

I'm a regular guy who likes things simple. For instance, I'll take a good, old-fashioned hamburger over a steak any day. A perfect evening could be something as simple as ordering out a pizza, spreading a blanket on the living room floor, sipping a glass of wine, while enjoying a movie in a dimly-lit room with someone I care for. I also enjoy watching OU football. I like to study the stock market and do a bit of trading, read (if it's something that is especially interesting to me), listen to music, etc. I also enjoy keeping up with national, world, and political events, and am absolutely fascinated by the current Presidential race. When the weather is warm, I like riding my bike at the lake.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and have spent nearly my entire life in or near OKC. The only exception was when I was in the Air Force for 8 yrs., 4 mos., 23 days. Go Air Force!

While in the Air Force, I desperately wanted to be a Hurricane Hunter, but events led me in another direction. In spite of not reaching that major goal, I had some absolutely fascinating jobs while in the Air Force. I'd still love to fly into hurricanes for a living, though. In fact, I have some rather odd goals in life: be in a Category 5 hurricane, be in an F5 tornado, be in an earthquake, see an erupting volcano. Nature at her worst (or best?) is just plain awesome and inspiring!

Severe thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, forest fires, etc. all have, in my opinion, a real beauty. Yes, they are all destructive and can kill many people. But, just looking at the cloud formations, the snow, the ice coating trees, the earth ripped apart, the fire—each of them has a unique kind of beauty. The reason I find them so inspiring is because it is a reminder that we humans are ultimately NOT in control. We think we have the world conquered and all is under our control, but ultimately, there is something greater than all of us that is truly in control.

I have two favorite seasons, storm and Oklahoma Sooners football, in that order. The others are boring, too hot, or too cold.

I have a demanding job but enjoy every minute of it. If you are interested, I recently wrote an article for our agency's Annual Report called Garbage: The Black Sheep of the Family.

I hope to visit New Zealand one day. NZ must have the most gorgeous landscape of any country on Earth.

If you're a real glutton for punishment, you can find out a lot more about me on my brag sheet.

Several musings about the Constitution:
Our safety, our liberty, depends upon preserving the Constitution of the United States as our fathers made it inviolate. The people of the United States are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution. (Abraham Lincoln)
Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government. (James Madison)
Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. (Abraham Lincoln)
The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and interests. (Patrick Henry)
It can not be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ! (Patrick Henry)
If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. (James Madison)
Since the general civilization of mankind, I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpation. (James Madison)
The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. (James Madison)
The Constitution preserves the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation where the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms. (James Madison)
I also wish that the Pledge of Allegiance were directed at the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as it is when the President takes his oath of office, rather than to the flag and the nation. (Dr. Carl Sagan. Not bad for a liberal athiest.)
Our Constitution was not written in the sands to be washed away by each wave of new judges blown in by each successive political wind. (Hugo Black)
The Constitution shall never be construed...to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms. (Samuel Adams)
If the Constitution is to be construed to mean what the majority at any given period in history wish the Constitution to mean, why a written Constitution? (Unknown, but makes sense)
[I]f we and our posterity reject religious instruction and authority, violate the rules of eternal justice, trifle with the injunctions of morality, and recklessly destroy the political constitution which holds us together, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us, that shall bury all our glory in profound obscurity. My Interests

Weather! I've wanted to be a meteorologist since I was in sixth grade. To me, lightning is the most beautiful display God created; however, this opinion could change should I ever be fortunate enough to witness a spectacular auroral display. But, no sound in the world is more soothing than the low, rolling rumble of thunder. I also love the haunting, lonely wail of a tornado siren. In fact, spring is my favorite time of year because it's storm season!

Space has also fascinated me since a very young age. I can vividly remember getting up early in the morning to watch the Gemini and Apollo missions back when the public and the three networks still cared about space exploration. In fact, while I was in the Air Force, there was a program under consideration to put a weather officer aboard the Shuttle. My goal was to be one of those few weather officers, thus the reason for pursuing my Master's Degree subject and my thesis: Measurements of the Interaction of High Voltage Biassed Conductors with the Ionosphere . Even though I never reached that goal, I am still fascinated with the entire space program.

Along with space, astronomy is another topic I find extremely fascinating.

I love Sooner football, so I am always looking forward to the period September through January. GO SOONERS!

For you Sooners trivia buffs out there, did you know that the OU fight song "Boomer Sooner" is adapted from the 1898 song "La Hoola Boola" by Bob Cole and Billy Johnson? The "La Hoola Boola" tune first became a fight song in 1900 for Yale University under the name "Boola Boola," having been devised prior to the November 24th game with Harvard. Yale won, 28-0. Then, in 1905, "Boomer Sooner" was adapted to the tune.

I enjoy following the stock market and trying to make a few bucks off it, and also enjoy riding my bike around Lake Hefner. I like to shoot my .22 and my Dad's Walther, though I'm not a hunter. I'm perfectly content to plink cans across the ground, shoot targets, etc.

I'd like to meet:

James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, so I could discuss Constitutional issues with them and get both Federalist and Anti-Federalist opinions.

All of the Addams Family, but especially Lisa Loring (Wednesday Addams). I'd also like to meet Laurel and Hardy.

Everyone on my friends list that I haven't met.

Music:

Country music PRIOR to the Urban Cowboy craze. Since then, I think country music has lost its roots. Give me old Willie Nelson, Hank Thompson, Hank Snow, Faron Young, Jim Reeves, Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel any day over the junk they call country nowdays. Bluegrass is awesome, too! I also like '50s - '70s "rock & roll", but not the acid rock, metal stuff. It's too loud. My favorite song of all time-Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers. In fact, if you're REALLY interested in knowing my tastes in music, you can see my current mp3 collection here.

Movies:

Action, comedy, horror, and some romance type stuff. Favorite movie of all time is the original War of the Worlds (1953). Second favorite is We Were Soldiers. I'm also a HUGE Laurel and Hardy fan!! No comedy team was ever funnier, in my opinion. Other movies I like include High Noon (great story of conflict "...twixt love and duty"), Apollo 13, Meet the Fockers (Funnier than Meet the Parents. Gotta love that fake boob! lol), Tears of the Sun, The Day After (1983), Message in a Bottle, Black Hawk Down, Savannah Smiles, Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Air Force One, Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("It's just a flesh wound!").

Television:

I can usually be found watching History Channel, Learning Channel, Discovery Channel, Fox News Channel, some Court TV and TV Land. Any more, network TV just plain sucks. I'm also sort of a news junkie. Shows like Forensic Files and Cold Case Files fascinate me. My favorite show of all time is The Addams Family (please note, this is a two "d" Addams, NOT a one "d" Adams). Even though I was a mere child of 7 years when the show started, I had a HUGE crush on Wednesday :) I also love Mr. Ed. How much simpler things were back then! Dragnet, Adam-12, and Batman were also favorite shows of mine.

Heroes:

I've been blessed with two absolutely outstanding young men for sons! They've overcome difficulties, work hard, are determined and independent, but are also very compassionate. You guys RULE!

As I've become older, I've come to realize my grandfathers were also very influential men in my life because they were the only stable male role models I had. They were both self-made men through whom I learned kindness, gentleness, a giving heart, an excellent work ethic, attention to detail, and unpretentiousness.

I am also inspired by our Founding Fathers. They had a dream, gave that dream a name—The Declaration of Independence—and from that simple beginning, put forth the concept that because He created us, God bestowed upon us certain rights that no man, no government, could change. Yes, throughout history men and governments have trampled those inalienable rights, have taken them away by force or coercion. But, those actions did NOT change the fact that God gave those rights to us when He gave us our humanity and as such, no man or government had a right to take them away. Thus, a new country was founded on the concept that men should be free, that government should exist only by the choice of the governed, that government is to serve the people. Based on this concept, the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution to define the extent to which the people CHOSE to be governed and to let that government know there were certain rights it could NOT take from the people.

I have a deep sense of gratitude to those men who had this vision and the determination to make it happen. I also have a deep sense of sadness that today, the citizens of the US and many of its elected leaders have little sense of the real meaning of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I honestly believe there will not be many more generations before those documents are little more than a historical footnote in American history, with little meaning to the nation.
