Two if by Sea originated in the heart of Santa Cruz, CA. In December 2006, Johnny Oliveria and Gavilan (Gavi) Gallardo met at a mutual friend’s house, both on a mission to score some good weed. They got stoned. Shortly thereafter, they started an acoustic two-piece. In July 2007, Sean James joined the two young misfits to complete the union that is now Two if by Sea.
Johnny, a lengthy kid hungry for life and punk rock, had already begun making a name for himself in the local Santa Cruz scene. He played bass with quite a few known bands in town, but after the unexpected demise of his band Strike Out, Johnny decided to put down the bass. So, like a duck to water, Johnny picked up guitar, and he picked it up well. He was ready to start anew. As fate would have it, soon after he made this decision, Johnny met Gavi.
Gavi, a young, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomer to Santa Cruz had just moved from a small town in southern Arizona. You might know it as Tucson. He played guitar for fun, but had a drive to succeed as a musician in Santa Cruz. Already a self-proclaimed writer and poet, Gavi thought to vocalize his words and strum along with them. The outcome stemmed from his strongly rooted southern influence and undying drive to create a unique sound. He and Johnny had similar goals and began jamming together.
It was love at first listen. The two young lads knew that they had found their niche in mixing fast paced country ballads with the anger, energy, and pure fun of punk rock. Johnny’s gritty, grimy guitar solos and Gavi’s rusty-tin-can-and-cigarettes vocals were close to perfection. As a duo, Johnny and Gavi started playing parties with their two acoustic guitars. They screamed loud, drunken sailor-type chants until their throats bled. But to achieve the full-bodied flavor they both wanted, the boys knew they needed more than just two guitars.
Meet Sean James. This guy had been in the Santa Cruz scene playing drums for over a decade. He had played everything from ska to punk to hardcore. This time, though, Sean was looking for something laid back and upbeat. Sean and Johnny had been friends for years, and had played together in a few ‘went nowhere’ bands. When Johnny approached him with an acoustic electric folk-punk project, Sean jumped at the opportunity. The rest has been and is still magic.
One electric guitar, one acoustic electric guitar, a few drums, some scratchy lyrics and three great friends. This is Two if by Sea. Take it or leave it.
