DJ Fooey is renowned for his high energy/tightly mixed sets that never fail to get the crowd pumpin' and jumpin'! He is a dj in demand and whether it be your sister's best friends wedding, a 21st or a set at a superclub like The BLOC, Fooey prides himself on making it a night to remember. To him it doesn't matter if it's searching for that new elusive song on the net or in a record shop, working out a set, practicing or writing original material, he loves it all. There is never a day in the life of Fooey that doesn't involve something to do with music. As a result of his passion for beats and basslines, Sean has graced the decks at most of Newcastle's hotspots - Finnigan's, Cambridge, MBar, The Star, Barchello, Harbour Bar and Frostbites - plus held residencies at Fanny's, The CBD, The Gateway, Harrigan's (Wineries) and most recently The BLOC Nightclub (Penrith) and The Hunter Valley Brewery, plus The Crown & Anchor & King St Hotel with his funk/breaks/house based LIVE band FUNK SODA.
Fooey's dj journey began over 7 years ago when techno and doff doff was rampant and glow sticks were cool. He was a talented drummer but struggled with juggling full-time work as a personal trainer and making band reheresals. So in time he turned his love of beats into something more solo, djing. He became known as DJ Blend and the then newly renovated back room at Fanny's he states was his "djing birthplace." His style was french and vocal house and his music selection certainly made up for his beat mixing skills. Even in the early stages of his career, he had the essential dj ability of knowing what song to play next to keep the crowd happy and the dancefloor full at all times.
After 12 months at Fanny's, DJ Blend moved onto the Gateway and it's fickal and demanding crowd (he often refers to this time as his "dj apprencticeship"). During this time his beat mixing skills improved dramatically as patrons constantly pushed him to be a better dj (the weekly 7 hour sets didn't hurt either!) and if being a straight boy in a gay club wasn't enough to deal with, his dj ego also took a battering. Having to play mainstream/Top 40 club hits by Britney, Whitney, Kylie, Danni, Madonna and Pink every week took its toll, but somehow he would find "ramped up" remixes to play that satisfied both him and the crowd. After a 3 year/100+ set residency at The Gateway, DJ Blend retired and momentarily "hung-up his headphones." He came away from that experience with one important lesson in djing - play what the crowd wants to hear, not want you want to play. As a result his dj ego now allows him to play the genre the crowd at that particular venue wants to hear - "I dj to get people dancing" he says , "I never want an empty dancefloor."
After a 3 month hiatus, his dj itch got the better of him and Sean reinvented himself as DJ Fooey and went back to his dance music roots and his love of old skool, hip/hop, funk and funky vocal house. In this time he also met two accomplished musicians - Damo and Clint - and formed the outfit, DJ Fooey and the Funk Brothers. The boys originally brought live sax and bongos to Fooey's funk fuelled sets, but late in 2006 the band transformed and renamed themselves - FUNK SODA. Their awesome live show now inlcudes sax, synth, keyboard, drum-kit, percussion, vocals (Lady K) and features Fooey originals, remixes and mash-ups. Fooey and the boys are also working on another project which will feature two female vocalists called LEKTRIK SODA!
However, when Fooey goes solo your going to get a little disco and funky vocal house and alot of dirty electro and breakbeats. The electro bug has bitten and Fooey often indulges himself in his darkside, mixing in originals like Rippin It and Filthy with the likes of Tonite Only, Hook n Sling, Dirty South and Vandalism.
Yes, his dj genres are broad and varied, but it's this versatility that keeps a Fooey dancefloor crankin!
