Miss Bette Noir

Short is where it's at, Brother.

About Me

Old-fashioned girl living in her old-fashioned world.
A simple creature with simple tastes:
booze/friends, music/friends, flicks/friends, laughs/friends.
Porridge (friends optional).

My Interests

Doing things, seeing stuff, hearing sounds, touching cloth

I'd like to meet:

It's a brunette thing (sigh...)

Interesting...(no prizes for guessing - it ain't a quiz, kids)

Music:

"Ooooh look out, you Rock 'n' Rollers..."
Always and forever: Zep (Jimmy - sigh), Mister Jimi, Mr Bowie in most disguises, Beatles, Stones, The Who (RIP Keith x), The Doors, Kinks, Miss Hynde and her band, Stooges, Rod & The Faces, Freddie + the boys, Elvis (early AND Vegas), Creedence, Mamas and Papas (lovely), Cream/Eric/Derek, Pink Floyd, Love, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Dylan, Beach Boys, Nuggets stuff, Motown/Stax, Booker T, Blossom Dearie, Ella, Dionne/Aretha/Janis/Dusty/Nina (ladies with heart AND soul), Marvin/Otis/Sam, Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Link Wray (Rumble - first song I ever murdered all the way through on my guitar), Gershwin/Porter/Kern, Django (thanks, Nigel), Stephane & Yehudi/Duke/Louis/Earl (thanks, Daddy xxx)

Currently liking: Black Keys, Detroit Cobras, Grinderman, Black Mountain, Koop, Vetiver, Midlake, Seasick Steve. Having a bit of a Big O moment too.

My Rockin' Through The Ages back-catalogue:
Early exposure to swing/jazz by Dad, Motown/northern soul by older brother, Beatles by bro-in-law, Bay City Rollers/Osmonds by older sister (!), Chic - Le Freak (first single I ever bought out of my own money, school trip to France aged 11), Jam/Blondie (early school discos), Rainbow/AC/DC (later school discos - always suspicious of people who say they NEVER had a Metal phase, however short...), Smiths/B52's/Joy Division/The Cramps/Siouxsie/Talking Heads/Bauhaus (Charlies/Coachhouse), Pixies/Nirvana/Mudhoney/Dinosaur Junior/Fugazi/Jane's Addiction (RIP Duchess Of York), Stone Roses/Mondays/Inspirals/La's, The Orb (just for one visually spectacular gig), Bad Brains (they ROCKED The Black Hole, ably assisted by the mighty Frogs Of War), The Instigators (The Time Is Now, boys), Jok (sycophancy is a terrible thing), recommendations from Jolly Roger, DJ pirate king... Oh yeah, and Joe Pasquale singing Handel's Messiah Hallelujah Chorus, accompanied by Hands Randall on kazoo and Tez X on triangle (available only on white label 12", remix by Jive Bunny).

Movies:

Cabaret (Liza, singing, stockings, Hitler Youth - brilliant), 39 Steps (Robert Donat)/Rebecca/Rear Window (most Hitchcock, in fact), Wizard Of Oz, Scorcese/Al/Rob de N/Pesci (any combination), Woody Allen, Sound Of Music (singing + Hitler Youth - again...), The Hunger (Bowie/Deneuve/lesbians/vampires - perfect), Powell/Pressburger, black and white classics, Harris/Burton/O'Toole/Finney (swoon), stiff-upper-lip war films (Trevor Howard/Dickie Attenborough/Noel Coward being terribly British), Spinal Tap (Nige - he goes up to 11), Performance, The Kids Are Alright, 24 Hour Party People, Elvis 68 Comeback Special (THAT leather suit), kitchen sink stuff, Sin City, Lord Of The Rings, Carry On Up The Khyber (Mustapha Leak - heeee-larious, and my Dad laughed just like Sid James), Borat (never got over the wizard's sleeve line), The Long Good Friday, The French Connection (class film, not toss clothing brand), Chinatown, The Italian Job/Get Carter/Harry Palmer films (Caine at his finest), Monty Python, Withnail (Booze Rules), Ealing comedies, Hammer horrors (Goths never die...)
Recently: La Vie En Rose (beautifully lit, beautifully shot, beautiful acting)

Television:

Sony Bravia - dead swanky, me. Used as a big radio, and mainly for watching films and comedy.
Currently watching The Thick Of It - specially for Malcolm's quality swearing

Books:

I can read, and I read lots of 'em.
Currently:
Across The Great Divide: The Band and America - Barney Hoskyns
Also on the go:
Stalingrad - Antony Beevor (and it's taking me nearly as long as the battle to read the book - will this never end???)
Berlin In The 20's - Rainer Metzger (a lovely gift from a lovely person...I like looking at the pretty pictures...born too late...sigh...)

Heroes:

Not sure about this one - but I did meet (I use the term 'meet' loosely - I ran 100 yards to force him to sign my A-Z) James May off Top Gear a while back, got very breathless/flustered (combo of meeting lovely hairy tv journo/running 100 yds), and muttered something about him being " a bit of a hero of mine" which isn't strictly true. I do, however, find him strangely attractive, which I'm aware really isn't the same as being a hero...
True heroes ticked off the list:
Ray Davies (King Kink - lovely)
Kevin Keegan (King Perm)
