A little history lesson for ya...
As the years passed, and various combinations of the Alpha Males hung out / jammed together, something became very clear to them—that their greatest common bond was not being great friends from the same hometown… No sir, it was their love of great music. Out of a mutual love for music bore the desire and need to play great music—as friends, and as a truly bugged-out band.
In October 2004, the Don took the reigns and began organizing practices and writing sessions wherever the eight beasts and their instruments would fit—this was not always an easy task. By January of 2005, the Alpha Male Gorillas were settled in to a freezing cold garage in Milton, NY, creating, writing, eating, drinking, smoking, and mostly fighting. Amidst all the chaos, a completely new sound emerged from the frozen tundra: A bluesy form of hip-hop, highlighted with elements of psychedelic rock, and reggae. By April of '05, the band had their backs to the wall with their first show looming, and the hectic schedules of all eight gorillas bringing discord to rehearsals—something had to be done. The Gorillas made due with whoever could attend practice. With the many multi-talented players in the band trading instruments and filling in for absentee members, the songs managed to be performed at practice, and they were performed remarkably well. With the ever-changing combinations of musicians and instruments, the songs began to take on a different flavor from their original conceptions. In time, certain drummers, rhythm guitarists, vocalists, keyboardists, and bassists alike became "best-suited" for individual songs because of the unique style they brought to their instrument, and to the songs themselves.
AMG spent the summer and fall of 2005 further developing their sound, and playing their unique brand of music before audiences all over the Hudson Valley, New York. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and left crowds wondering which of the following elements of this circus-of-a-band was the most original? Was it the beautiful mixture of so many different genres of music? Was it the fresh dynamics and lineup changes during their live show? Or was it the lyrics and subject matter of their music?
After the release of their first record, "Band of Bugouts" in early 2006, AMG had achieved airplay on the Hudson Valley's three largest radio stations: K104.7 (Pop), 101.5 WPDH (Classic Rock), and 96.9 WRRV (New Rock Alternative), with their hit single, "Bleed Marinara." Shortly after the catchy "Italian rap" song hit the airwaves, the Alpha Male Gorillas headlined the first of their many shows at the impenetrable Chance Theater in Poughkeepsie, NY. The show was a monster success, setting attendance records for unsigned local acts. AMG continued to hammer the Hudson Valley, including a Live performance on the Reno and Frankenberry Morning Radio Show on WPDH. Unsatisfied remaining in their native habitat, the Alpha Male Gorillas have rocked NYC several times, (including a headlining gig Crash Mansion and a performance at the Lower East Side Film Festival) before journeying north to Albany, and then out of state (CT, NJ, and PA). For their events outside of the Hudson Valley, the Gorillas charter the "Banana Bus" for their hometown fans, so that they may arrive safely to and from the concert.
In late 2007, early 2008, the Gorillas were selected among 500 bands in Manhattan, 5,000 bands in the country, and 10,000 bands worldwide to compete in the Bodog Battle of the Bands. AMG seized the opportunity and took the Battle by storm--by packing the bus, writing new music, and dominating all 4 rounds of the competition. Victories at Fontana's, The Lion's Den, and Blender Theater, had the band primed as The Manhattan Battleground's Greatest, and among the top 13 unsigned bands in the entire Northeast, and of the original 5,000, the Gorillas found themselves in the top 49 in the country. Eying reality TV stardom, The Gorillas were one victory from being one of 4 US bands to compete for the Million Dollar Recording Contract, provided they could sway the judges and the fans on the big stage at the Fillmore New York (formerly known as Irving Plaza). The Band of Bugouts bulldozed the audience to vote for them with a blistering set-- their greatest to date. Unfortunately, the opinions of the judges left the Gorillas in a nearly-permanent state of "WHAT THE FUCK??!!??" as AMG was passed over as The Notheast Regional Winners of the Bodog Battle.Upon chalking up their finals loss to the fulfillment of the Ultimate Warrior's prophetic ramblings, or some other reason beyond their understanding, the Alpha Males did what they always do: Dust themselves off, chug a beer, and finally strong-arm some unsuspecting bystander. The Gorillas are preparing to enter the recording studio, as the time has come for a new record. If you want a piece of it, come and get it. If you don't, it'll probably get a piece of you. The takeover is near. A GORILLA DOMINATION IS IN EFFECT.
