Jay ‘Buddy’ Birch first got into the Club scene in 1988, where he began playing Acid House, House, Hip-Hop, Soul & Funk at Inner City Nightclubs and After-hour Clubs under the name of DJ Wisdom.
Jay’s name soon filtered around the club scene and he began doing guest spots at various Leeds City Centre locations in the early 1990’s before settling down to DJ residencies at Club Nato, The Pleasure Rooms and Liquid in his hometown of Leeds where he played alongside DJ’s such as David Morales, Tom Wainwright, Full intention, Judge Jules, Tall Paul, Paul Taylor, K-Klass, Roger Sanchez, Darryl Pandy, Mousse T and Alison Limerick, Tin Tin Out, to name but a few.
In 1993, alongside Radical C, he officially launched “U4RIA“ in Leeds, which was the first weekly all nighter in the North of England.
Along the way, he has also had his own show on Local Radio Station, “Peoples FM”, where he played House Music under the name of DJ Wisdom along with Radical C and DJ Benji, from 1989 until 1996. During this time he was co-awarded the title of “DJ of the Year “ in 1993, and the duo were notably the first non-reggae/soul DJ’s to win this award.
By the late 1990’s, he had helped launch two of the biggest R’n’B Nights in the North of England, namely “Love Dough” and “Coffy”. Whilst holding down an eight year residency from 1998-2006, at “Sweet Revival”, the longest running weekly R’n’B night in the North.
He also had residencies at “Cardinal Sins” and “Po Na Na” in Harrogate , “Opus” in Manchester as well as “Townhouse”, “Rehab” and "Space" in Leeds city centre, to name but a few. He also guested at legendary nights and clubs such as “Back 2 Basics”, "Gallery", “Stush” and “Funky Mule”, "Mission", "My House", "Revolution Bars", "Discoteque" as well as numerous other clubs throughout the country where he has played alongside DJ's & Artists such as The Sugarhill Gang, Jazzy B, Ronnie Herel, Eric Morillo, Shola Ama and Mark B & Blade, Dan Greenpeace, not to mention local hero the late, great Richard Whiteley. Jay has also played at various events including the Leeds United and Manchester United Players parties and the Karen Millen Fashion Show and many more..
In 2003, Jay was honoured to be voted “Best Resident DJ” at the Leeds Bar and Club Awards.
Jay can still be found playing guest slots at various clubs throughout the UK, as well as playing at his regular guest slots and weekly residencies at “Rififi Nightclub” in Stalybridge as well as "Norman Bar", "Fresh Jive", "Oracle", "Puro" and “Musique” in Leeds.
In 2004, Jay launched “JBB Entertainment Solutions” along with his business Partner Melanie Mortimer, JBB Entertainment Solutions has evolved into one of the UK’s leading DJ Agencies / Entertainment Providers, with legendary names such as Graeme Park, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Darryl Pandy, Dr S Gachet, Utah Saints, Phunkin' DJ's, Mikey Dalton (Big Brother),Alex Pepper and other worldwide DJ’s and Artists.
With 2007 seeing the launch of "The Wide Awake Club" and the exclusive “Kings of Clubs” club nights, and many new UK and International DJ’s and Artists already set to enlist with JBB Entertainment Solutions, it looks like it will be a big year for Jay ‘Buddy’ Birch.
Jay has joined forces with Leeds Entrepeneur Paddy Connell, who owns Acid House Promotions, the company behind more than 40 well established Club Nights including the Retro Heaven, Soak, Kaos, Hacketts and the Milk Bar to name but a few. Jay has recently been appointed as the Director of Operations for Acid House Promotions.
