In the songs of Daan Hofman, dutch words blends with popmusic with the sound of old Europe. But how does a songs sound when are born born behind the dunes? Shaped by the wind that blowes from all parts of Europe towards the North Sea?
The songs of Daan have a bleusy mood, but they are raised in the Dutch clay. You can hear the the rags of French Chanson, Italian opera, Berlin Cabaret, Balkan Beats and Old Amsterdam Sailorballads.
But still, it sounds very refreshing. Cause it’s dealing with life as it is passing by at the right moment. An old soul in modern times, a modern troubadour if you like. By following nobody, Daan creates his own world with wanderers, lovers, dreamers, loners and losers. His songs are inhabited by people who wants more from daily life. They are touching by their endless desire, but also tragic when the end up empty handed.
Daan is a romatic storyteller, but don’t expect dairynovels, no uproaring lovescenes, there are no navels involved. “Fakkels van suiker†is much more a poetic rendering of his own live to see. Sometimes funny, often touching, and always charming.
Since a few years he is plays in theatres and festivals with his own band.
With his deep melancholic voice he brings a train of selfwilling songs, colourful and grimly, as life itself. He obviously listened a lot to Jacques Brel, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, great artist, who made their own universe by songs. But also closer back home he find some soulmates, in Spinvis, Herman van Veen and Nynke Laverman.Daan studied theatre in Antwerp and Utrecht, and still studies 'Composing for film' at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
