About Me
Really and truly I was born in the parish of Portland, Port Antonio and raised with my grandparents, where church was a major factor and also essential to them both. However I was named after my father with just the “V†changed Devon to Deron Thompson. Mother, who is a citizen of the US, always tries to communicate with us as often as possible, us meaning my two brothers and my little sister, me being the eldest among them definitely paving the way positively.
I attended basic school, infant school then to the primary level, where I became active in sports and was also a part of the school’s junior choir where I learnt the chords, keys and melody from weekly choir practices. The music grew up on me so fast by the time I reached grade 5 to 6 I was fully a music lover singing various songs word for word, Reggae, Dancehall and also wrote a few lines for myself.
Examinations results came out, everybody was so overwhelmed for one who had a pass, not many student had a pass that year from my primary school so I was made excited as well.
I then moved on to Port Antonio High at the time Comprehensive High where emotions grew, sense of humor and also my physical appearance. It was there and then I truly evolve into music as there were often school concerts and I was called on to do my thing, at age 13 I wasn’t afraid of the large audience a matter of fact I loved it. Finding a few people like myself with a passion for music we then start capitalizing taking over as people began to realized the natural talent these schools boys have it grew from the school’s to the streets tremendously but each act was a solo we were only there together to keep the energy flowing.
I was 16 years old when Bling Dawg first show was scheduled to be in Portland, Port Antonio “Bling Dawg Summer Jamâ€. There was mad party fever in the air as I was selected to be an early act by Bling Dawg himself. The night of the show the venue jam packed not like one a them school crowd I knew but extremely bigger. Anyway the M.C. called me DERRO-BLACKS out of ure own parish I was nervous then as I took the mic and went out and said “ALL A DI MAN DEM WHE A GAL ALONE A GET UNU TOHN UP MEK ME SEE U HAND UP†and the crowd went off there was nothing I could do wrong again as I left the crowd in a uproar. And from there and then I was known as a artist around Portland and by people who saw me performed so there was no stopping from then on but that’s was the first so called “big show†that I performed on.
I then moved to Ocho Rios to further my studies after high school in the hospitality industry where I then got a job as a Food and Beverage server at Sunset Jamaica Grande, making a source of in come for myself, still always writing and going about singing my original songs.
And with my ego and my strong passion for music I visited the studios in and about Ocho Rios where I met Courtney McIntouch Irie FM radio producer and also the manager of the artist Perfect the Hand Cart Bwoy. We then start doing some work at work at Double Lion Recording Studio that’s where Teflon and Little Hero and also Perfect was located on a business level. At that time I was still Derro Blacks until I recorded my song the Freedom Rhythm titled Cross Di Bridge on the Intouch Label produced by Courtney McIntouch. With my versatile writing ability and always seems to be a person with an open mind and proper vocabulary being the youngster I am, Courtney and I decided to change my name from Derro-Blacks to GRAMATIKAL and it worked, everybody loved it. My second single was titled World Cup on the World Cup Rhythm also produced by Courtney McIntouch.
I then start performing on more shows such as Stone Love Anniversary, Follow the Arrow, clubs like Asylum, Amnesia, Margaritaville and you know you got road sessions like road shows, dances. I always try to promote myself as much as possible, giving up my job as a Food and Beverage server at Sunset Jamaica Grande. Now living in Kingston because that’s where it’s really happening. Still visit my Grandparents in Portland, Port Antonio Grandmother and my brothers and my little sister, my Grandfather had died miss him so much condolence goes out.
Its hard coping in the big city at time but as the saying goes if you want good you nose haffi run.
Admire artist such as Anthony B, Perfect but my role model is no other than Assassin the lyrical genius.
My aim is to become a household name in and around the world and also to set a positive attitude, a humble personality to give courage to the youths, perseverance is the key, there is no second chance to make a first impression and if you got potential why not show it.
And of course Gramatikal is responsible for the Dancehall Diplomatically and Gramatically.
