Stop. has more ethics when it comes to sampling. He will usually only sample from vinyl unless he finds a small snippet he feels is vital for a track elsewhere, never from CDs though. He is always on the look out for the rare undiscovered samples from some obscure soul or funk labels, though classic rock, blues, jazz, gospel and even Spanish records are on his list of hot finds. Thrift stores, second hand stores, swap-meets, junk sales and classified ads are his hunting ground. 45s and original 12" are his pride. There is little he will tell you of where he got a sample from, vagueness is key when Stop. answers the much asked "Where did you get that sample". Much of this is because he not only put in work getting the seeking, finding, sampling and chopping the sample but he spent time editing it too. There may be very little resemblance to the original anyway so why tell you it's origins?
He did tell us that he hit upon a fantastic find of old 'school curriculum' records while helping out a non-profit computers for the youth program. With the little detail we did get, there seems to be about 100 or so records. I'm sure this will keep him busy tweaking all those samples.
Breaks and Hip-Hop instrumentals are his main game when he is at the boards. A few down tempo tracks are also added to keep it a chill ambience in the air.
Sample Ed1t was the brainchild of Stop. and had been brewing in his mind for about a year before he got the opportunity to realize his idea at Gunther Murphy's. This weekly event has been going on for since April 03 and is steadily building a following in the underground. With the invite to bring your own tracks and/or visuals each week is truely unique.
Stop. fully believes in the skratch. Like a lot of skratch fiends around the world, it was the Invisibl Skratch Piklz that really, fully, introduced him to the joys of skratch. He studies the greats and to develop his own style he practices hard. Not being a battle DJ, Stop. is not really one for routines. He more so likes to grab a bag of records in the last hour or so before he goes on and just jams with what he feels. "There's a lot of places where I've spun and the crowd is so odd and non descript that one week I could be rocking the hip-hop and they are all grooving but the next week hip-hop just isnt working it so I have to realize that and flip on some funk and soul which can be pretty universal, except maybe among the younger crowds." Although we don't often get such an extensive quote from Stop., we can feel where he's coming from.
A true vinyl junky with only a drinking habit that's worse. Stop. is know for his 20+ rounds drinking sessions with everything from vodka, Baileys(36), Tequila , Cider and Gin, even some Jagermeister shots to keep the buzz up. Stop. takes full advantage of open tabs when he spins at a club. All night benders and crashing at a mates place were his forte where he would arrive home the next day at 4 in the p.m. but now he amazes even himself when he some how finds his way home over upto 8 mile distances to his own bed...somehow. It gets even more amazing when he visits a foreign place.
