SUCCESSES
Our students have succeeded well beyond our highest hopes and expectations as parents and staff, in the ..ABC..s of Halau Ku Mana..
A .. Academics:
Many of our students have dramatic increases in their academic achievement and abilities, their desire to learn, and to live their dreams! Examples: Average improvement of 1.9 grade levels in reading last school year, with 85% showing improvements in GPA from their prior schools, 35% of those improving by 1 full point in GPA or more. ..A.. could also be for Attendance. Halau Ku Mana, with a 90% Native Hawaiian population, has had between 92% and 95% attendance each year, amongst the highest in the state!
B .. Behavior:
Students identified as having behavior problems at former schools, show drastic turnarounds in attitude, relations, and behavior, as evident by a drop in office referrals, student and parent surveys, and teacher observations.
C - Culture:
As most enter Halau Ku Mana with little cultural experiences, all soon develop a good grounding and strong sense of pride and identity in their (genealogical or host) culture, language, and values. There are countless examples. Just a few include learning hula and oli (chants), native plant gardens and lo..i(taro patch), traditional fishponds, and traditionally voyaging and way finding.
CHALLENGES
* Despite the law calling for ..equity in funding and services.., here is our reality:
1) Operating funds .. Charter schools receive just over HALF the amount spent per child in mainstream schools
2) Services not provided - Food Service, Counselor, Transportation, and Health Aide and more
3) Facilities .. Public Charter schools receive little to no facilities support, by far the ..1 reason why charter schools shut down nationwide!
* Our current challenge is to build a campus from scratch by June 2007, while fundraising and running the school. We seek kokua(help) through supporting this CD project, putting us on your "top friends" to increase public awareness, volunteers to help clear land and/or move, and connections to potential donors, or contractors, engineers, etc. who might provide services pro bono or at discount rate.
