I am here for Friends

About Me

In October of 1973, as the rain came down showering all of Manchester, England, I was born in St. Mary’s hospital weighing only 4lbs 6oz. I was indeed a small baby considering my sister, Judith, was born 10lbs four years prior. Like any other child in my town, I attended St. Edward’s primary school, where I was taught manners, music, which led me to the love of drums and to always stand when a teacher entered the room. At 6 years old, I began taking drum lessons with a teacher named George Walker. I studied with him for about 3 years and have also studied with a famous American drum teacher named Chet Doboe. From there, I went to St. Vincent de Paul secondary school in Manchester. It was there I met my best friend for life, Mark Woods, known to crowds of many as ‘Woodzy’. Woodzy and I still keep in contact and visit each other about twice a year. In February of 1988, while at the ripe old age of 14 and going through a quarter life crises, my mother Florence told my sister and me we were moving to America. And we’re leaving in a month! My aunt Mary on my mother’s side had lived in America for over 20 years and encouraged my mum to make the move. In March of 1988, we landed at J.F.K. airport not knowing what lay ahead. We stayed at my aunt’s house in Manhattan, which was a culture shock (let’s just say in England, when the traffic light is red, the cars stop - even if there on the other side of the road). We rented a house in Franklin Square, Long Island suburbia and I attended H. Frank Carey high school for four years before graduating in 1992. During that time, I played drums in a few bands with a great bass player named Sanjay and he was a fan of all the bass greats; Stanley Clarke, Mark King, Geddy Lee and his personal favorite, Sting. We would play most cover songs including a lot of Police material (with me doing my best Stewart Copeland impression). We even recorded two albums of original material with my band called Seventh Sign. In 2002, I married my wife Kathy, who I met on a blind date. My friend Rob had showed me a picture of her and said if I cut my long, past the shoulder length, rock and roll hair, he will introduce us. Well, I cut my hair, showed her an old photo of my long hair only to find out, she liked me with long hair! Needless to say, given a few highs and lows, that’s my life up till now.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Hmmm, good question. I have met alot of people already, but I would have to say my #1 favourite drummer of all time, Phil Gould from Level 42. I would love to sit down with him for an hour or 10, have a cup of tea with him and ask a million questions. I'd set up another drum set next to mine, so I could play with my drum hero (since 1984). The master and his apprentice. I would also (since you asked), like to meet Sting since I have already met Andy & Stewart from The Police. I got to see them twice at Madison Square Garden on August 1st and October 31st 2007. Now if Level 42 comes to America, my life would be complete. Phil Gould, if your reading this, I've got the kettle on and I'm setting up the drums!
