ORIGINS: KEMETIC YOGA FOUNDATION AND PHILOSOPHY Search the ruins of antiquity and stone-age technology reveals an art form specifically designed for the human body and mind. For over 5000 years this art has been practiced in many cultures throughout the world. On wall paintings and sculptures in Egypt dating to 3,400 BC some of the images depicted are of figures in positions that we now know to be Yoga postures. Rediscovery of this ancient art was an attempt to define Yoga in a way that people of African descent could relate to. It acknowledges the African// Kemetic/ Kushite origins of Yoga and makes the link between Ancient Egypt and the Indus Kush civilization prior to Aryan invasion. The originators of Yoga in ancient Egypt/Kemet believed that the mind, body and spirit functioned together in a dynamic inter-related and inter-dependent system. KEMETIC Yoga is efficient in the development of the muscular-skeletal system, respiratory system and the circulatory system. The postures indigenous to Kemetic Yoga are eventually combined and executed by flowing from one pose to the next without stopping the flow of motion. Relaxation, concentration, meditation and transcendence are also achieved through breathing and meditation techniques. The collective thought in ancient Kemet perceived everything an individual did in life needed to reflect perfection, order and balance. Ancient Kamites believed that unless a person was physically, mentally and spiritually healthy that he/she could not reach the state of perfection which was called MAAT; universal balance, harmony and order. It was thought that if Ma'at didn't exist, the universe would exist in chaos.ABOUT THE TEACHER: My name is Nadia Pillay; a certified Yoga instructor from the Society of Kemetic Yoga. I've studied under the guidance of Master Instructor; Yiser Ra Hotep. Based on the Kemetic teachings, I have my own company; SHU YOGA. SHU= LIFE FORCE. The body is the human beings vehicle of expression as it journey’s on this planet. We are only given one to last us our entire lifetime. Through SHU YOGA I wish to encourage healthy and whole lifestyles so that ones “vehicle” is well-serviced, tuned-up and nourished as it carries us on our journey. Optimum health grows at the meeting point where the mind, body, and spirit are aligned. Kemetic Yoga services the body directly in this way. My main objective is to promote an awareness of ones body and behold the miracle it truly is; to express the importance of celebrating our anatomy and the intelligent engineering that goes into keeping the body instrument alive and functioning.
