You have heard the name. Now meet the legend as Duane "Dog" Chapman lets you enter his world.
This exciting series follows the real-life exploits of an expert bounty hunter. Each episode features Dog and his posse risking their necks while trying to bring in fugitives from the law. Capturing fugitives is no easy task, but Dog is a master at it. He employs strength, cunning, and the power of persuasion to catch his prey.
His work takes him into some rough spots—seedy hotels, drug dens, and tough neighborhoods. No matter where he goes, Dog tries to help out people when he can, when they'll listen. He's a big believer in second chances, having turned his own life around. After serving time in a Texas penitentiary, Dog vowed to redeem himself by operating on the right side of the law. It is his own criminal past that inspires him to help the fugitives he hunts down to go straight. Dog strongly believes in the American judicial system, and he shows mercy to everyone he can.
No matter how much sympathy he has for his prey, Dog has to get the job done. And no mission could be completed without the assistance of his posse. For Dog, hunting fugitives is a family affair. His wife and business partner, Beth, helps out every step of the way, supporting Dog in the field, handling most of the paperwork, and checking up on leads, warrants, and fugitive addresses. His sons, Leland and Duane Lee, are also important members of Dog's crew. While not a relative, Tim Chapman is another key part of the posse and is considered by Dog to be a "blood brother." At the end of the day, as Dog says, "We're family. That's what counts."
Duane Lee Chapman was born to father Wesley and mother Barbara. Chapman grew up with three younger siblings in Denver, Colorado. Before becoming a bounty hunter, Chapman had frequent scrapes with the law, including 18 arrests for armed robbery. In 1977, Chapman was convicted of murder; he was sentenced to 5 years of hard labor. He attained parole in 1979, and maintains that he is innocent of the original charges, as it was a fellow gang member who actually committed the murder
Dog the Bounty Hunter is a reality television show, chronicling Duane "Dog" Chapman's operations in his bounty hunting firm, Da Kine Bail Bonds in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dog is joined in his exploits by his wife and business partner, Beth Smith Chapman, his sons Leland and Duane Lee, and Tim Chapman. His nephew Justin Bihag also appeared during the first season.
Besides Hawaii, newer episodes have included cases in Dog Chapman's home state of Colorado and the city of San Francisco. Most episodes have been filmed in the city of Honolulu. He claims to have captured over 6,000 bail jumpers and criminals.
While the program mostly follows Chapman and his team's pursuits against actual criminals who violated the conditions of their bail, it also shows his life as a husband, a father to some of his twelve children and an ex-convict. Chapman and Smith were married on May 20, 2006. Dog's compassionate side is frequently on display, as he looks for ways to coach his catches back to the right path.
The program spun off from their appearance in the A&E Network's Take This Job, a program about people with unusual occupations. Both shows are produced for A&E by Hybrid Films, a New York-based production company.
Their bail bond business, Da Kine Bail Bonds, has locations on the islands of Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. The Oahu office is located at 1383 Queen Emma St. in Honolulu.
Dog is only 5'7" tall and wears special boots that make him appear to be 5'10". Dog is a devout Christian, and his crew always pray together before a hunt. Dog was Born February 1, 1953. Considered the greatest bounty hunter in the world, Duane "Dog" Chapman has made more than 6,000 captures in his 27-year career. This highly intense, charismatic ex-con and born-again Christian is the king of the comebacks.
This modern-day hero once served time in a Texas prison. "I am what rehabilitation stands for," Dog says. Now on the right side of the law, Dog is tireless in his efforts to bring in the bad guys and encourage them to turn their lives around. Over the years, the list of fugitives Dog claims to have either helped catch or single-handedly brought to justice reads like a who's who of America's most wanted, including high-profile rapist and Max Factor heir, Andrew Luster. Dog credits much of his success to his knack for getting the most out of his informants. "Seventy percent of all my captures happen because some good ol' American has turned them in by giving me information," he says.
Raised in Denver, Dog is the oldest of four children born to Wesley and Barbara Chapman. His dad was a welder in the U.S. Navy, while his mother was a minister with the First Assembly of God who often traveled to Native American reservations to teach the gospel. Dog currently resides in Hawaii with his wife and business partner, Beth, and three of his children.
2006 Arrest
At approximately 6:00 am Hawaiian time on September 14, 2006, Duane Chapman, his son Leland and Tim Chapman were arrested by US Marshals at the request of the Mexican government. Duane, Leland and Tim were arrested for bounty hunting, which is illegal in Mexico. On June 18, 2003, the Chapman trio captured convicted fugitive rapist Andrew Luster (heir to Max Factor cosmetics), who had fled to Mexico. Duane, Leland and Tim have since been released on bail ($300,000 for Duane and $100,000 each for the other two).
Duane Chapman's book "You Can Run But You Can't Hide: The Life and Times of Dog the Bounty Hunter" was to be set for a February 2007 release, but has since been indefinitely postponed.
Dog and his crew were parodied in the tenth season South Park episode "Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy." Cartman portrayed Dog, but was a hall monitor rather than a bounty hunter.
Beth Chapman
Alice Elizabeth Smith, also known as Beth Smith, Beth Chapman, and Alice Barmore (born on October 29, 1967 in Denver, Colorado) is the fifth wife of bounty hunter Duane Chapman.Together, they run Da Kine Bailbonds with his sons, Leland Chapman and Duane Lee Chapman II, and with Tim Chapman. She appears on Dog the Bounty Hunter.
Alice Smith was the daughter of Garry L. Smith, a former minor league first baseman. It had been claimed on the television series that Garry Smith was a baseball player for the Kansas City Athletics; this claim is not supported by the Baseball Almanac.
It has been claimed that Beth was Duane Chapman's common law wife for 16 years, however, she married Keith A. Barmore in Denver on 26/8/1991.
She was in the bail bond business in Colorado as a competitor to Duane Chapman's sister, but she no longer carries a license.
Beth is the mother of four children. She lost custody of her first child, reportedly named Dominic, who was taken by social services. She also is the mother of Cecily. She has two children with Duane Chapman: Bonnie Jo and Garry. Duane has several other children from previous marriages.
One of Duane Chapman's daughters, Barbara Katie Chapman, was killed in a car accident near Fairbanks, Alaska, on May 19, 2006, the day before Beth and Duane's wedding.
As of May 26, 2006, she still signs legal documents under the name Alice E. Barmore.
According to Denver court records, Alice E. Smith, born October 29, 1967, faced numerous charges between 1988 and 1989 for shoplifting, disturbing the peace, assault, and carrying a concealed weapon.
Court cases were:
88GS843535 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
88GS845382 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
89GS016092 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
89GS019417 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967--
In 2002, as Alice Barmore, she faced numerous charges in a Jefferson County, Colorado court including extortion, false imprisonment, and forgery
.
In September 2006, Smith became embroiled in a controversy when she was detained and held for a contempt hearing after it was discovered she was wearing a microphone when she tried to attend a bail hearing for Duane Chapman.Cell phones and electronic recording equipment are banned from federal courthouses by law.
Beth Smith was parodied on South Park in the episode "Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy" on October 18th, 2006. The character "Beth" served under Eric Cartman (known as "Dawg") as he served as hall monitor at South Park Elementary.
Beth attributes her tough-as-nails attitude to her mother. It's this attitude that helps her succeed in the rough-and-tumble world of bail bonds.
Beth is a seasoned professional in the family business, having become a licensed bondsman at age 21. She was the youngest person licensed in Colorado at that time. Beth's main reason for working in bail bonds was none other than Dog, the best bounty hunter in Denver.
She quickly moved up the corporate ladder of the bonding business, chasing Dog all the while. After moving into a legislative position at the Bail Association, Beth helped rewrite Colorado bail laws.
Her main goal is to raise awareness of the justice system and to see Duane as sheriff of a small town one day. Beth feels blessed to have been able to overcome hardships in her life and to be in the position to help others do the same. Life is all about second chances.
Leland Chapman
Leland Blaine Chapman (born December 14, 1976 in Groom, Texas, USA) is a Hawaii bail bondsman, athlete and the third son of Duane "Dog" Chapman and the younger brother of Duane Lee Chapman II.
When Leland was younger he did not spend much time with his father. He still remembers the time when he could no longer say "hey" or "hey you" to get his dads attention. He had to say "dad". As a teenager, Leland was in a Denver, Colorado gang. He spent four years in a youth detention facility, otherwise known as a reform school. He still recalls times when he has ran away. Leland was about 18 when he had his first son, Dakota. At the time, Leland was working at K-Mart doing his best to make ends-meet. He considers his father, his son Dakota, and "the spirit of Hawaii" as the three major influences that made him go straight. At 21, Leland started a Da Kine Bail Bonds branch in Kona, Hawaii. Leland and his ex-wife Maui divorced in April 2005, but remain close friends.
Leland has a second son, Cobie, and shares a close relationship with both of his parents, appearing often in his father's reality show Dog the Bounty Hunter, along with Dog and the other members of his crew. He divides his time between his bail bonds business and professionally competing in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts and Extreme Boxing.Much like his father, Leland cares deeply for his family.
