The U.S. Falls In Love: America’s Obsession with Günther
Günther & the Sunshine Girls’ 1st-ever performance in the United States was on February 3, 2006, at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. His visit, sponsored by Saybrook, one of Yale’s twelve residential colleges, cost $25,000, sparking a small controversy in Connecticut media and community groups over whether the pop star’s visit was a good use of student activities funding. The event drew more than 3,500 students (Yale’s undergraduate enrollment is about 4,500) and tickets to the event were snatched up online in 3 hours. At the show, Günther and the Sunshine Girls performed "Tutti Frutti Summer Love" and "Ding Dong Song" as encores after Yale undergraduates enthusiastically chanted "Günther! Günther!" and "Ding Dong Song! Ding Dong Song!" Günther closed out the performance saying: "I love Yale. Always remember: Sex, Glamour, Champagne and Respect."
On May 7, 2006, Günther performed at the Tower Club at Princeton University (Princeton, New Jersey), alongside rock band Rooney and Wu-Tang Clan hip-hop impresario Ghostface Killah. He performed a set of 10 songs from his Pleasureman album, two of which were encores ("Teeny Weeny String Bikini" and "Ding Dong Song"), to an enthusiastic crowd of Princeton undergraduates. Throughout the performance, security personnel had to forcibly remove a number of students from the stage to prevent their repeated attempts to interact with Günther and the Sunshine Girls.
The U.S. Obsession, Part II: Günther Live in Hollywood
After spurning hundreds of university and public concert requests by major U.S. colleges and promoters, Günther & the Sunshine Girls made a triumphant return to the U.S. a year later at Williams College on May 10, 2007. They so energized the fans that they damaged the floor and possibly the supportive structure of the concert venue/building, Goodrich Hall. This was followed by a performance at the University of California, Santa Barbara on May 11, 2007, where Gunther performed to a crowd of 4,000 or more students and sang his chart-toppping hits and a double encore which included a second performance of the Ding Dong Song to cap the concert.
Günther then followed up with a concert the next day at the world famous El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on May 12, 2007. The concert was relocated to the larger El Rey 72 hours before the show after demand for the show’s tickets exceeded the capacity of a previously scheduled venue. The venue sold more than 300 tickets in the final 24 hours before the show, and more than 800 fans attended the sold-out Los Angeles El Rey Performance.
Günther & the Sunshine Girls returned to the U.S. in November of 2007 with shows in Orange County, California and Portland, Oregon. The Portland show at the Hawthorne Theatre sold out one week before the event, causing a flurry of black-market tickets to be sold at premiums online, some "Pleasureman VIP" tickets reportedly going for more than $100 per ticket on popular auction site eBay as well as Craigslist.com.
The trio returned to the States less than 4 weeks later, embarking on an unprecedented 3-day, 3-city tour from December 14 through Sunday, December 16, performing in Denver (Colorado), Atlanta (Georgia) & Chicago (Illinois) on back-to-back-to-back nights. Despite snowstorms in Denver and Chicago, nothing could keep Gunther & the Sunshine Girls’s superfanatics from showing up to witness history, as every show sold out!
