Give a 20 year old basketball star lots of money, fame, and a plush Los Angeles condo and you’re asking for trouble. That’s exactly what's in store for Morris "Mookie" Lovett.
Along with his girlfriend Pam Rivera, and best friend Fatimus Brown, Mookie leaves his sheltered life in suburban Orlando and heads for glitzy Los Angeles. Against his parents’ wishes, he drops college, basketball, and everything else to follow his dream of becoming a chart-topping rapper. With hot lyrical skills, good looks, and charisma, he feels he'll be a star in no time. It doesn’t take long for the fast life to send him spiraling towards self-destruction.
While he transforms in front of their eyes, Pam and Fatimus wonder if they made a wise decision leaving Orlando. They came to Los Angeles to support Mookie but also to chase dreams of their own. Pam wants to be a Hollywood fitness consultant and later own a celebrity salon and spa. Fatimus simply wants to spice up his life by shedding his "mama's boy" image. Both try to stay strong during these difficult times but worldly temptations are too great. Soon they find themselves wrapped in Mookie’s chaotic world of sex, music, wild parties, and drama. New meaning is given to the phrase ‘caught up’ as they all struggle to find their way in the world. If they don’t succeed, their lives may never be the same again.
What others have said about the book:
"A Dream Come True is an interesting tale that is somewhat reminiscent of movies like 8-Mile and similar storylines. The book is about moving along in the fast lane at the peak of youth, the height of desire, and the point of no return with ambition. A Dream Come True dissects our own willingness to do whatever it takes to follow a dream, and how we can lose ourselves in the process. I think most of us have been down this road in one way or another and you can relate to the characters and what they deal with easily. This is a story of what happens when passion leads to extremes that you can’t just run away from." —Jive Magazine
"A Dream Come True is light fiction, easy to read, meaningful without overdoing things. It might be described as a summer novel, something you might take to read at the beach, but it addresses issues that are serious enough that one might consider it for a discussion group, as the discussion group questions at the end of the book indicate. The characters are believable and a nice reminder that not all high school graduates interested in show business view themselves as pimps and hos. In fact, the young folks portrayed in A Dream Come True are probably more true to life than the live fast, die young crowd portrayed in hip hop music videos…many would appreciate the meaningful focus of this tale of black youth growing up in a complex world."—Pro Hip Hop

“Owens does an excellent job of pulling you into the story of Mookie, Pam, and Fatimus making you care about these characters and what will happen to them next. An easy read, "A Dream Come True," is still a page-turner. Fascinating and sexy, "A Dream Come True," is fast-paced, entertaining and hard to put down. The ending will leave you wanting to read more.”—Literary Wonders
