About Me
Zoe Townsend is a 17 year old girl with a passion for anything to do with the Arts and Entertainment. Singing, acting, dancing, poetry, songwriting, fashion…and so the list goes on. She’s been a professional performer - as a singer and flautist - since she was
11 years old and has been in 2 musical groups namely ‘Emanuel Gospel Band’ and ‘Bizazzed’ a singing and musical theater group, who have both toured nationally to different parts of South Africa, sharing their passion and talent throughout the country.Zoë has been in the cast of productions (especially musical theatre productions) as a dancer and ensemble cast member. These include ‘Esther’; ‘Calamity Jane’;
‘Destiny’s Road’ and ‘Karnival, the Performance’ (to name a few), with lead roles in ‘Our Fair Ladies’ – as Jane; ‘Grease’ – as Sandy; ‘Bizazzed’ – as Leigh and more recently she was cast as Stubb in the musical ‘Moby Dick!’ - A South African Premier!She has performed with famous personalities such as: Jodi-Li Deerling (ex-Yo TV presenter, star of Isidingo, Villa Rose, Jika Majika and founder of ‘Jo Productions’); Nikki Raypen (one of the 15 hand-picked South African dancer/performers, to star in the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera); and alongside award winning South African groups - Malaika and Jamali, in ‘Bizazzed’ at the Vuvuzela Arts Festival 2006 - a cultural festival aiming to uplift the community featuring South Africa’s finest musicians/actors/dancers/comedians/entertainers. In 2006, Zoë Townsend and Jodi-Li Deerling partnered up and wrote ‘You can take control’ – an original song written especially for the Famsa Women’s Day Event arranged by Rory Townsend. The duo performed the song at the event where Kim Engelbrecht, better known as Lollie from Isidingo, was the guest speaker.If all of that wasn’t enough, in February this year Zoe sang the theme song (produced, written and arranged by Vincent Fraser) for the TV Documentary ‘Dance of Victory’ and, together with her mother, Liesl Townsend, they choreographed the dance for the show. The documentary aired on SABC 2 on the series ‘Our Nation in Color’ a joint project by Unicef and SABC.Gracing the airwaves as a radio presenter was yet another project Zoe Townsend has been a part of. Teaming up with William Paulson, they presented ‘Kid’s Radio’ on Kingfisher FM which aired weekly on Saturdays mornings. In 2006/2007 Zoe was a judge and vocal coach for a talent search run by local radio station, Bay FM, called the ‘Bay FM 5 minutes of Fame’ competition. She trained the vocalists for their performances in conjunction to judging.Zoe trained as a dancer in Classical Ballet for 10 years; has done Ballroom Dancing and has and is still to a great extent involved in Christian Dance (which includes all styles – hip hop, modern, African etc.) Choreography is another one of her fetishes and she keeps active and involved in this area too. She is a Dramatic Art and Music student at her school and serves on the board of 4 committees there, all related to music/drama/art and community building. One of the instruments Zoe plays (classically) is the flute. And in this she has excelled. Zoe Townsend was chosen as principal flautist in the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in 2006 as well as having excelled in music competitions. "I write most of my songs on the piano and so that’s where my piano comes in – besides having played classically for a really short period. But I worship, write, get inspired and make music mainly on the piano and so that is my other instrument…for the moment!!â€One motto she lives by is:
“It’s not what you do but the way that you do it, that makes you number 1!â€
"God has my life in His hands & He gives me life. My praise for Him is from a grateful heart for this all ;) Thank you Lord God"And so all that’s left to say about the ‘Culture Vulture’ is...‘watch this space’!
