Mainland Free Agents SignedBy BRENT WORONOFF Staff WriterWhile Kelin Johnson knows he is lucky to get a chance, E.J. Kuale realizes this might be his last opportunity. The former Mainland High standouts each agreed to terms on NFL free agent contracts. Johnson, a safety out of the University of Georgia, is headed to the Seattle Seahawks, while Kuale accepted an offer from the Kansas City Chiefs. They will participate in their teams' minicamps this weekend.Kuale has been out of football for a year. After his senior season at LSU in 2005, the linebacker spent a season on the New Orleans Saints practice squad. But the Saints released him after he was charged with marijuana possession last year. The charges were dropped earlier this year. He said a friend of his had left marijuana in his car."(The incident) made me understand the way you have to live your life," Kuale said Monday. "Sitting out of football for a year allowed me to sit back and reflect. I'm one of the few who have had the opportunity to play in the league. I'm privileged. And since I'm privileged, I have to seize the moment."Johnson said he also realizes how fortunate he is."I'm counting my blessings," Johnson said. "A lot of guys from my school haven't gotten phone calls yet."Johnson got several calls from teams during the second day of the NFL Draft on Sunday, but he wasn't selected in the seven rounds. After the draft, a stream of offers came in. He chose Seattle over Baltimore, Cleveland and Kansas City."My agent and I sat down and weighed the negatives and positives of each team, and we thought Seattle would be a good choice because they didn't draft any safeties," Johnson said. "I'm going to try to go up there and make the special teams and go from there. I have to come in and be humble. I know I have to follow before I can lead."Kuale had a private workout with the Chiefs in January, a team that showed this past weekend that it is committed to rebuilding with young players. Kansas City was among the most active teams in the draft, selecting 12 players. While none of those were linebackers, the Chiefs did sign two other free agent linebackers Monday."They told us not to worry about that," said Sam Gahagan, a part-owner of Axios Sports Management, which represents Kuale. "They said, 'We want E.J. up here.' "
