Having grown up on the Sunny-ish Sunshine Coast of small-town west coast British Columbia, Serena's fiddle playing is fun, driving, and down to earth. Having a background in classical music (with a B.Mus. from Capilano College and Brandon University) as well as a love for Cape Breton and it's fiddle music and a penchant for groovy pseudo-improvisatory world music, Serena's diverse musical interests are reflected in both her sound and in the groups she currently plays with. She can be heard with Victoria's coastal country/folk/rockers The Gruff, Gibsons based newgrass/canadiana/world folkies Steve K and The Hardwood Groove, The Rakish Angles - a 4-pc stringband that gets their inspiration from David Grisman, The Creaking Tree String Quartet, and dusted off jazz standards, and in her living room jamming with afro-beat/dub/jazz albums while writing tunes that fit the moment. She can also be seen free-lancing around Vancouver, and playing with the "TBN" (to-be-named: now taking suggestions) string quartet who has recorded for Alberta's Shuyler Jensen (Black Hen Records) and performed with Vancouver's Mark Berube, and recorded for film. Serena also plays with guitarist/singer/songwriter Eric Norman. In the passsssttttt...... After playing essentially traditional Celtic music for a few years with pianist Wade Tarling, she performed with a self-titled band which lead to a duo project with pianist/singer/songwriter Gary Loewen. During a university exchange trip to Mexico she played and recorded with a Trova/latin/funk band and later collaborated with saxophonist/keyboardist Ben Dietschi, bassist Jesse Dietschi (NuPhunk Orchestra, BD duo), and drummer Graydon Cramer (NuPhunk Orchestra) to form a funky celtic, jazz influenced band that earned the name "Anagram." Serena has been on stages at the Springville World Folk Festival in Utah accompanying some lovely young Scottish dancers, the Brandon Folk Festival, plenty-o pubs, clubs, and theatres in Victoria, Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Colima (Mexico) and even played for a school for orphaned and vulnerable children in Swaziland, Africa, from whom she learned much about the virtues of sharing loud enthusiastic song. Serena's personal playing style now reflects both her classical training and background in folk music as well as her interest in other ethnic music and improvisation.
