In 1958 The Recording Industry Association Of America - RIAA - launched their Award Program, which was to be a formal certification process, establishing Gold Awards as the industry standard for success. Their Gold and Platinum Awards Program is the longest-running, objective measure of achievement for sound recordings within the U.S. music industry. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry - IFPI - administers international certifications.The criteria for receiving a gold certification is that the album must have sold 500 000 copies. For platinum certification the figure is 1 million copies sold. And consequently, for multi platinums additional millions are required.
