About Me
I am a graduate of the arts management program at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. I live in Madison where I work at the Wisconsin Union Theater and the Memorial Union. I've worked for or volunteered with several arts organizations including the Central Wisconsin Children's Museum, the Players theater group, a college band in Stevens Point, The Profits (now We the Living). I talk about Scott Lamps' music ( )probably on a daily basis and still don't do it justice.
I also have a minor in music and studied flute under Paul Doebler. I love to write songs and play guitar and piano. Not for money. or for people. just for me.
Trying to describe music’s value to society (more so, humanity) is similar to trying to describe god- everyone has their own ideas and in the end, nobody knows who is right and who is wrong (but everyone likes to think they are right). Perhaps that is the beauty of it. For some music is an escape- a chance to see the world from someone else’s perspective and leave behind the drudgery that runs rampant in our daily lives. It is a way to experience something we have not or cannot experience. For others music is a way of finding a sense of self- it is an expression of our deepest fears and emotions, a proclamation of all that we are and all that we wish we could be.
For some music is a luxury- season tickets to the opera or flying to New York to see a work premiered at Carnegie Hall. For others music is a necessity- playing shows for next to no pay, simply because there is nothing in the world that can produce the same feeling-the feeling of belonging to something bigger, of being connected to something more powerful than ourselves or reaching a state of pure self-actualization. It is driving two hours to sneak into a sold-out show where the stage can’t be seen; but the music can be heard, and that’s all that matters.
For some music is best when heard with others. It is a chance to bond, to socialize, to be seen. For some music is a personal experience, best when we confine ourselves to our bedrooms and shut out the world by putting on that ridiculously large and heavy set of headphones our father had in college.
Music is an integral part of our everyday life. When we were children it helped us fall asleep at night, taught us our alphabet and the 50 states, and gave us another excuse to listen to the sound of our own voice. Let’s admit it, even most adults still like to hear the sound of their own voice. Now that we’re older, music often wakes us up in the morning, makes the drive to work bearable, and entertains us after a long day at the office. It’s played in the grocery store, the mall, bars, the bathrooms, and yes, even in the elevator if you’re a fan of Muzak. It keeps our mind off the fact that we’ve been on hold for five minutes, and sometimes it convinces us not to turn off the seemingly endless list of movie credits that few people really care about but watch for the sole purpose of hearing the rest of the song.
Music is a way for us to celebrate. It is at our birthday parties, our church services, our graduations, our weddings, and even our funerals. It is a way to celebrate the fact that we made it through another year, a way for us to praise the big guy in the sky if we so choose, and a way to find some use for the million cheesy love songs out there.
Music is a way of remembering our past, of documenting the present, and of sharing our hopes for the future. Whether telling the tale of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald or simply proclaiming that we are waiting for the world to change, it encapsulates a single moment in time, which future generations can hear and maybe even appreciate if they don’t utter the phrase, “you call THAT music?â€
Music is a way for us to heal. It is a way for us to release emotional tension in a way that is not destructive to others or ourselves. Some heal best by playing music. We sit up all night writing odes to the ones we love but are too scared to tell. We write songs mourning those we have lost. We angrily strum the guitar to release tension or pound the keyboard, playing every minor chord we know because we are in a lousy mood. Some heal by singing popular songs. When we’re feeling lonely we bust out “All By Myself,†complete with hairbrush microphone. When we’re angry, because our boyfriend or girlfriend left us or cheated on us or insert-valid-reason-for-being-upset-with-them-here, we crank up “Earl Had to Die†and conveniently replace “Earl†with the name of the one who did us wrong.
In all its glory, music unites us, separates us, defines us, and refines us. It makes us laugh, cry, wonder, imagine, and sometimes, even groan. So what is the value of music to humanity? It is a reflection and a declaration of our very being, and thus, if we value ourselves, valuing music should be second nature...
