About Me

The Stellanovas are the core duo of husband/wife team Mary Gaines (cello, piccolo bass, guitar, baritone uke, vocals) and Chris Wagoner (violin, uke, mandolin, accordion, hawaiian guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals). The Stellanovas also perform as a trio and a quartet with Mr. Ed Fila on the guitar and Mr. "Groovy" Jim Huwe on drums.We play "cafe jazz", a mix of original and vintage jazz, swing, latin, r&b, calypso, folk-pop, and whatever else might make you move.Veteran midwest performing and recording artists for almost two decades, Gaines and Wagoner have appeared on many major and indie-label releases from artists as various as The Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Willy Porter, and Carrie Newcomer, and have opened for many national artists incuding: Taj Majal, The Band, Delbert McClinton, Suzanne Vega, and Asleep at the Wheel.

Influences: We all listen to so many different things that influence everything we do, but here are a few: Louis Jordan, Stuff Smith, Tin Hat Trio, Chet Baker, Sam Jones, Sonny Rollins, Dr. John, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Dan Hicks, Beck, Keb Mo, Bonnie Raitt, Sarah Vaughn, David Lindley, Ry Cooder, Astor Piazzola.....and so many more.
Sounds Like: Chet Baker, Stuff Smith, & Sarah Vaughn sitting in with The Squirrel Nut Zippers (after a couple bottles of wine).
