DUNNZ is helping to redefine the sound of the Midwest's independent hiphop scene through his music production. In the last few years, he's become a prized producer thanks to his remixes. “One of the main reasons why I make music is to make people feel the way I do when I hear great music. I think a lot of music today is missing soul. Today’s music sounds too perfect and overproduced. I bring my jazz, blues, soul, and old skool hiphop influncements to my music. I believe that’s what sets me apart from the rest of today’s beatmakers.â€
Growing up in Chicago, DUNNZ was eager to show the world his own talents. A die hard hiphop head and b-boy, he fell in love with hiphop culture at a young age. Originally, he started as an emcee. As an emcee, he not only thought of the lyrics, but also thought of music behind the lyrics. “From grammar school to high school, I’ve always been known for my beatboxing,†he recalls. “The way I would do it was a lot more intricate than the average. I would include hi-hat and bassline sounds in my beatboxing. As funny as it sounds, I think that was the start of my music production. You have to be able to compose the music in your mind before you can play it for the world.â€
The 29 year old producer actually does more than program drum patterns. He plays the drums and currently taking piano lessons to help develop his craft. DUNNZ says, "I call myself a musical claustrophobic. I want to expand beyond hiphop's musical boundaries. Eventually, I want to do more than hiphop music." With a Bachelors of Art Degree in Music Business Management, he shows his strong belief in the value of education. While attending Columbia College, in 2002 he was the Vice President of a non-profit hiphop organization called "H20". Their focus was to use hiphop as an instrument to help the less fortunate.
His experience in the music business goes from being an Urban Marketing Intern at EMI Music to being a Sales and Marketing Coordinator at Loud Records. Through those experiences, DUNNZ learned the professionalism and determination required to be successful in the music business. DUNNZ has been apart of events for Rochelle Farelle, The Beatnuts, Guru, and many more. "My experience in the music business has prepared me to take Dunned Out Entertainment to new heights."
