Forming at a full-moon backyard jam on a dry hot evening in July, Gypsy Salami have taken some small portions of the South-Eastern Kootenays by storm. Performing at such esteemed venues as “The Big Bar Pub” in Bummers Roost Ontario, to the “The Bummers Roost” in Big Bar BC, this Husband and Wife duo are quickly becoming the next big Belly Dancing / Surf Punk combo to come out of the Rocky Mountain Trench. The story Of Gypsy Salami begins in the poor, lower class suburbs of Chisinau, Moldova where Mama Caliente began her training to become the first woman to Belly Dance across the entire circumference of the earth. Unfortunately her dreams of being included in the Guinness book of work records were thwarted by the ruthless Miss Natassja of the mother nation (USSR) who continually danced the entire circumference sixteen times in a row in only 42 years. Knowing this was an unbeatable feat Mama Caliente formulated a plan to travel to the thriving metropolis of the Rocky Mountain Trench in southern BC due to its legendary status as a Belly Dancing mecca.Upon arrival in Canada, Mama Caliente immediately caught the attention a local peasant named Papa Frio. Papa Frio had been slaving away as a roadie for a local band of lumberjacks called “the Honeymans” for several years and was now looking for a wife to spend his riches on ($50). He soon approached Mama Caliente and asked her to be his wife. She accepted and they moved into a small house in the famed Morrison Subdivision south of Skookumchuck. One evening that summer Papa Frio picked up his guitar, went out on the porch, and began playing some techniques he had learned from his years on the road with the Honeymans. Shortly after Mama Caliente came out and began dancing about the porch. Almost instantly, a crown of over ten thousand people gathered around the small house screaming wildly for more. Gypsy Salami was born.Since then Gypsy Salami has played over three shows at various venues in the Skookumchuck-Wasa area, had rave reviews in major publications like the Spuzzum Daily and the Lone Butte Gazzette, and was featured on a community television program in Yahk, BC.If this world class act comes to your area its not one to be missed.
